Aux Fan W123 84 300D

So I know somewhere of a Aux fan refresh wiki here or somewhere else....that's not the question. Only question I have is should you be able to hear the fan kick on over an idle? It seemed really loud, but not terrible sounding, no screeching or bearing noise. Just seemed like it spun fast to move lots of air.

Any thoughts?

(I'm sorry for these dumb posts)

I have an '82 300D and have no difficulty hearing the aux fan at low engine rpm. And that would be while sitting in the driver's seat with the windows closed.

Okay cool. It sounded like a leaf blower that was three or four buildings down from where I was, so I didn't know if I should take it apart this weekend while i'm doing engine oil cooler lines ( i hear its a absolute PITA) and the transmission modulator (I cant even see this thing on the car)

Have the proper wrenches. Soak the oil cooler fittings in the penetrating oil of your choice. Have a back up plan for a new cooler or at least a ride on Monday in case you bung up the fittings on the cooler. Do a search for nipples and you should find more info.

Are you doing the engine mount at the same time as the oil lines?

Unfortunately no. whunter told me a cool trick to check the engine mounts with the mercedes special tool #47282 47302 4738 -- a #2 pencil !! But I dont see the cutouts where the pencil would fit --- which means I suppose that I need new mounts. They sure dont look like they do in the worldpac pictures

"No stupid questions, only stupid answers."

Better to ask than spend 5 hours wrenching in the wrong area.

I'll bet your 28 year-old fan (presumably) would love to have a new bearing. Mine did.

X2 on having a back up ride to work if the Oil Cooler Nipple Strips. It happend to me.
A corroded Piece of the Aluminun Nipple stuck to the Threads of the Oil Cooler Nut and proceeded to cut up the last 3 threads on the Nipple when I removed the Nut.
In the DIY Section one of Our Members suggest cutting one or 2 length wise cuts on the Nut Flats and sticking a Screwdriver in and spltting the Nut. (That may be the only 100% way to avoid Stripping threads on the Nipple.)
If you nick the outer threads on the Nipple it is not a problem because the Oil Cooler Hoses do not seal on the threads.

In the DIY Section there is a Mercedes approved repair if you Strip a Nipple.
