Previous owner syndrome strikes.... again!
My glow plug light hasn't been coming on for a month now, might be due to warm weather but I don't believe so since starting is a little rough. But not smokey.
That is clearly an OEM 30 amp fuse --correction 80 amp strip fuse---- This was clearly a better option than spending $0.67 on a proper fuse. Good thing I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow to get some misc parts. Last edited by TheDon; 06-13-2012 at 11:14 AM. |

The preglow relay should have an 80Amp strip fuse.

My bad, 80 amp strip fuse, for all of $0.15..................................................................
I need to dig around my spare parts bin and see if I have one, if not the dealership is on my way to class Called and the dealer wants $7.23 plus tax for one 80 am strip fuse. Ha! Never! Also checked my GP's and numbers 2 and 4 are dead. Hurray now I get to change glow plugs! Last edited by TheDon; 06-13-2012 at 11:49 AM. |

Some times ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get things to work. can`t always find a strip fuse in a mc parts store but a spade 80 amp might be more readily available. a good Mc giver fix. much better than a piece of wire to jump it.
When you go to the dealer, pick up 2, then tape the extra one in the glove box. Charlie

One of my SDs had foil (I guess from a cigarette pack) in place of the fuse when I got it (off eBay).

Yep, been there, done that, got the t-shirt, as far as PO Syndrome.
At least this time it's only a fuse you have to replace. On mine, I had to cut out and splice in new headlight bulb connectors - because the PO had put 100 watt Euro bulbs in the headlights and literally MELTED the connectors. While you're at the junkyard, best grab a new cover for the GP relay as well - the PO has cut away part of it so he could jury-rig in that spade fuse.

Sometimes you do have to "do what ya gotta do", however I've been starting this car with no glow plugs for at least 2 weeks now and it starts just fine. Heck, pancakes the 240D with no history on the engine and a ton of miles started in the winter with no glow plugs. I did get 6 new Bosch GP's with the car so I will be replacing those all on Friday. Just need to stop by harbor freight and get a 1/4" universal joint and a section of fuel line and I'll be good to go. |

btw - NAPA carries these fuses both in 80A and 30A (blower) - for about 50 cents a piece.

Sounds like the same story as far as going to a CJD dealer for the CRD - massively inflated price compared to aftermarket. I guess Daimler did teach them one thing, all too well.
Thing is though, at least with CJD dealers, they're so desperate to make sales, that if they quote you an inflated price, and you tell them "sorry, but I can order it on line for XXX", quite often they'll drop the BS and MATCH the reduced price you quoted them.

When I need an 80A fuse and can't find one locally, I take 1/8 dia plumbers solder and hammer it flat. Instant strip fuse!

Sure, but I doubt it will make it by friday. Should I include an 80 amp strip fuse as well? I have 2 spares and already have one taped in the glove box as Charlie mentioned above.
It is easier to use the reamer if you pull the intake IMHO. I'm sure it can be done with it in place if you are patient though. It may take some cursing. BTW the nuts on the wires are captured on the 124. PM or email me your address and I'll send it out.

Yikes. i've not had that particular run in that bad... but I too have had to go back and repair other peoples repairs and put it back to factory. Redoing most of the fixes in the dash area was an absolute nightmare. Hopefully you dont find any more 'interesting' fixes
