Rear axle compatibility between 84 300SD and 85 300TD
I'm curious if anyone knows if the rear axles on my 84 300SD (126 sedan) might fit on my 85 300TD (123 wagon)? I have a perfectly decent parts car that might have the axle and boots in decent shape, I dunno. I would hate to take two cars apart only to see that one is an inch longer or something.
I am thinking that the rear differentials are the same, as are the rear arms. But I get the impression that the bodies are different widths and thus the wheels may be further apart. |

Even though the ends are similar parts the W126 is wider so the rod in the middle is too long.
You could in principle use the ends of the W126 (first generation W126 that is) and the rod in the middle from the W123 ones though...

I am under the impression that while the 126 is wider at the front the rear end is the same as the 123.

One way to resolve this issue is to go to your favorite internet part seller and look up the part numbers for bolt Cars.
If the part numbers are not the same they are not the same parts. You can re-check that by going to another internet part seller and doing the same.

the rear end components (brake, Trailing arms, Diff) are the same, but they are spaced further apart, so the axles are not the same length between the chassis. the axle cans are not the same either, the SD has a MUCH larger center can/spider so swapping shafts may not work either... not that I'd know how to swap a shaft without extremely sensitive tools...

...to be honest with you this is when I could really do with access to the real EPC instead of struggling with the Russian one. All I can go on is what's in the W123 FSM chapter 35-660. Here there is mention of the amount of oil in each can for many models. I've made a screen shot to show what I'm talking about => It looks like some of the 126 models have a larger inside can 'cos there's more oil in it - but not all of them.
