New daily driver :) 1985 300td

Picked up a 1985 300td a couple weeks ago. Not quite in the cheap wagon club territory but pretty close.

One of my buddies told me about a wagon he has seen parked in a nearby carport and seems to have never been moved in recent months. Tall grass was growing around the edges of the car. Fast forward a few weeks after we first spoke about it, some confusion as to what street it is on and I finally find it.

I love knocking on someone's front door and asking about a diesel Mercedes sitting in their driveway and see the look on their face when I ask if it's possibly for sale . "gosh we were just talking about donating it for a tax write off". Perfect timing

Had to replace frozen front calipers, replace some filters, oil change, wash and wax and now she's my daily driver. It's very nice to be back in a wagon. I forgot how useful the cargo area is. Even has a trailer hitch

Invalid links. I have an 82 wagon I purchased for $500. It's my daily driver. She needs a wash and rubbing compound wax for sure. I get a few looks while driving it. Very few conversations I like her a lot.

Looking to find another set of light weight alloys with hubcaps, upgrade to a better aftermarket radio, repaint the hood or do a two tone paint job. I am thinking of white or silver for the roof and hood and along the doors to the body line that is above the door handles. Also looking to tint the windows as dark as possible. The paint and tint will go a long way to reduce the influx of Florida heat into the car.

Nice karma on this one. Boy that sits nicely at the rear, just like SLS should....

Congrats. Looks much nicer than mine.

Another nice score. I really miss my 123. I'd love a wagon.

Yeah the karma with this wagon has been cool

79mercy and I did the butt test on the sls by starting the car and going back and sitting in the rear area and feeling the rear end rise and level off. What a great feeling of relief to have a properly working system. Receipts indicate sls work done in last two years.

I found one almost hidden in tall grass on the far corner of a yard, distinguishable by the hood emblem and the roof rack showing. keep thinking about knocking on the door one of these days.

Newmann, nice find, looks good. you just saved it from the crusher. from my experience
donated cars usually end up at a PNP type yard.

Around here the donated cars either go to a low end used car dealer or 90% of the time straight to the PNP bone yards. Either way I do believe I saved it from almost certain destiny of ending up in a yard as these old diesel MBs are rarely seen in car lots these days.

Had to tighten the belts tonight, the squealing was getting worse and worse and was quite embarrassing. Turning on the a/c made it worse so I had to do something. A 30 minute job turns into over an hour .

The ac bolts were kind of tight to get to but I managed ok. The alternator was a different story. After loosening the 16 and 17mm bolts I went to adjust the unit and turned and turned and turned and finally realized something was not right as the belts were gaining tension. It seems as though the tightening bracket had cracked off and had nothing to back against to hold the tension. I used a couple of flat stock washers to provide a tension point. I know that the flat stock is slightly tilted and causing the threaded rod to be distorted but it's what I had on hand for a quick fix. I hope it stays in place . See the pic for reference. I just have the after "fix" pic.

I also made a quick bracket to old the transmission shift sensor in place on top of the valve cover. The passenger side clip cracked off at some point and it was wanting to move around. Quick five minute fix using a section of a worm drive hose clamp. It does not wrap around, just makes an L bracket to keep it from shifting. See pic
