1987 300td leaking boost

New to me 300td 87 wagon. Seems to be low on bottom end and get wooshing noise as rpms rise. No black smoke, replaced large fuel filter which helped some. Also my alda is loose. It can be easily rotated 10 degrees or so.

The turbo doesn't help much on the bottom end so there's more going on. Can you find the source of the whoosing? There'll likely be an oil leak or soot where it's leaking.

Loose ALDA is probably a good thing if power is an issue. How about removing the ALDA for now to see if you find the power you're missing?

If I remove the alda is anything required to fill the void? Good tip on finding the leak.

You can cover the hole left by the ALDA but there's no need to other than to keep it clean in case you want to put back the ALDA. You can refit the ALDA with a couple of oil drain plug washers or whatever fits between the IP and ALDA which is practically disabling the ALDA.

Good call! The ARV plunger in my SDL was deformed and not properly sealing the port. I put a freeze plug to make sure ARV is disabled for good. Did the same on the 300D.

Most ALDA's have between .05 and 1.0mm of shims, in stock condition, which generally equates to one or two shims, at least in all the ones that I have seen in the many teardowns I have done personally. I usually shim the ALDA a full 3.0mm and then adjust to give the best acceleration on a stopwatch.

I have found all kinds of boost leaks on these cars. The most common is the O rings on the turbo inlet adapter, second would be the line going to the ALDA/Overboost Solenoid and third the intake gasket itself!!!!

I had one that would 'bubble' through the two halves of the intake gasket, even after replacement. Granted, this is a small loss, but it is a loss nonetheless. I coated the replacement with "The Right Stuff" which seemed to correct the problem.

Finally found some time to work on the leak. Didn't see any signs of leakage topside so I was leaning torwards the ARV. Removed the two bolts topside and crawled under the car to remove the bottom bolt. Was looking around with my work light and found my problem. I have a small hole about the width of a dime and 3/8 inches long on the very bottom of the exhaust turbine housing! I hate to be a cheap and lazy f--- but is there anyway it can be patched with an extreme heat type epoxy or something?

You can try but the compressor housing can glow red hot at full turn with EGTs in excess of 1000*F. I don't think many of us push our cars that hard on a regular basis, though.
