Vacuum pump infant mortality -- experience?

I just installed a new Pierburg-branded, Mercedes logo'd diesel vacuum pump (000 230 31 65) in my '96 E300. This was done purely as a precaution. The old pump appears clean and undamaged inside and is the "new" style with the enclosed bearing and four screws on the cover. However, it is the original on this car and has 286,000 miles on it. The new pump was made earlier this year in Germany and carries a 2012 date code stamp. Has anyone experienced an immediate failure of such a new vacuum pump?

Jeremy

several have failed, apparently the pivot arm snapps after a while. so inspection is still important on the pump.
it's cool that your old pump had the enclosed bearings, so I doubt it's original. hold onto it for a spare, or clean it up and sell it here used. I'm fairly certain anybody looking to replace their open design would buy your closed design for a few bucks!

The date codes on the old pumps match the dates of manufacture for the two cars so I think they are indeed original. Do we (the forum) know the approximate date Pierburg changed to the enclosed bearing? I get the feeling it was before 1990, like maybe 1988?

Good advice, I think I'll sell one and keep one for a spare.

It had to be after mid calendar-year 1992 as my model year 93 300D 2.5T (built is July 92) did NOT have the enclosed bearings - and it failed about a year ago at around 130K and dumped it's guts into my timing chain and oil pan.
