Question Test drove a 92 300SD - car rolls back on slight incline.

I always want to try out a W140 diesel with the 3.5L engine. I know it is a rod bender but I like to try it out.

I took it for a spin. It drove well but as I turned off the freeway and did a left turn to rejoin the north bound, the car rolled back when I took my foot off the pedal. It was on an incline but not very steep as it is on a bridge across the freeway. I am interested in the car dispite it is a rod-bender. Questions:

1) Why it rolls back?
2) Is it something serious with the tranny?

Thanks

Torque converter has more stall than you're used to?

I wouldn't think it's an issue at all if the fluid is clean, smells fresh and the tranny does everything else as it should.

Is that the one with the claimed $14K factory replacement engine? It should be relatively bend proof now if it's a real factory replacement engine.

Yep. The engine had been replaced with invoice to show. It was done in Arkansas and the owner had the car since 2009. The car drives decent but the interior is neglected, about 7 out of 10. I am interested but the price is a bit steep.

I expect the car to creep forwards if I lift my foot but this car rolls back so I am not sure. It is heavy car but the incline is really not that steep. I believe if it had been in San Francisco then it would be rolling back like a manual car. I do not feel the car trying to creep forwards. I did not pull the dip stick to check the fluid. I am just wonder if there is anything more sinister lurking in the tranny.

I think the car rolling back has more to do with where the idle speed is set on these cars than the transmission. There is a thread on here somewhere discussing weather or not they have an anti roll back feature. I think the consensus was that they did not.

Mine doesn't do that unless it's a moderate to steep incline....

Does it have the idle in second gear feature that the 123 and 126 cars have? If so, it may roll back, as the transmission does not have the same mechanical advantage is has in first gear.

Roll back is a non issue, it depends on the type of car and idle speed more than anything else.
