front wheel bearing seals availability

Hi guys,

Im planning to regrease the front wheel bearings this sunday as I checked them and one wheel is slightly loose when the caliper pressure is relieved.

I have got myself a tube of Valvoline cerulean grease and borrowing a dial indicator with clamp, - what Im stuck with is seals, NAPA did not have them, the kid at autozone could not look it up.

As these are generic wheel bearings, arent the seals a bit generic size too? Is there any other car that I can tell them to look up and get the right seals?

Autozone should have them, try a different robo-clerk. Take the mouse away and look it up for them.

I went to an internet part seller that displays the Mercedes part number = 0119975147
If you go to NAPA online there is Search Box for the Part Number and there is a small interchange Box. Select the Interchange Box and search.

When the Seals come up but there will be no price you need to select a store and when you do that it will ask for a Zip Code and then stores near your Zip Code. After you select a store the Seals will come back with a price.

What I got was Wheel Seal-Front Part Number-NOS 17654. Product Line NAPA Oil Seal. This one turned out to be as expensive as one from the Dealer.

The other Seal they carry part number ATM 2118445. Product Line Altron Imports was less than 1/2 of the other seals price.

The MSRP from the Mercedes Dealer is $13 each if the Dealer is willing to go by the MSRP.

But, there was important information there: Timken/Front Wheel Seal Part number 239134.
If that is the actual Timken number for the Seal it can be cross referenced at another store.

@diesel911 - thanks a lot, really helped me

I was looking at timken catalogs, and apparently they dont make a metric seal in 45x64x12 - the other bit is that the 95 E300D uses a set17 and set2 wheel bearings assembly which is not used by other 124 diesels

the autozone seal does not make sense to me, its like the diff seal of an old Honda manual tranny - the dimensions are way too big

I ran the Mercedes Part Number on eBay and they come up with a different Timken Part Number than Autozone has 239115. But, then when you run it through the check for your vehicle it has that that does not fit you Car???

So what ever I did recheck. To begin with make sure I have the Mercedes Part number correct.

Also there is with and without 4Matic

I went to the parts site that is supposed to look up parts by vehicle for timken stuff.
http://www.showmetheparts.com/timken/; and I said I did not want to take the survey and it just sat there and nothing else opend up.

So there was a blue shaded area saying "powered by show me the parts" and I clicked on that.
ShowMeTheParts - Automotive Aftermarket Electronic Catalog
I tried to use the vehicle look up but got it said it was not covered. Not even my W123.
Then I noticed like NAPA it has an interchange section.
When I plugged in the Mercedes Number something indeed came up. It shows a Timken Number for the Seal and an SKF number for the Seal.
See the Pic.

Yes I did find that - but it would have been real expensive to get them shipped quick. I have found the NAPA altrom seals at a shop and they are Elring brand for about 6 dollars and loose change a piece.

I will keep these timken numbers saved for reference. Makes it much easier to get parts.

Yes, having any part number from a specific company helps you shop around; I find the Mercedes Part numbers to be especially useful as a starting point.

refreshed the bearings, the bearings are japanese NTN in my car (changed I presume as the locknut was threaded backwards - cast washer was outside) the inner ones rollers are half way brown (no noise though), The old original MB grease was shiny in the hub and cap but stiff as bees wax.

The grease in the bearings was a very dark brown to orange tint and was sort of bleeding oil. Everything went smoothly as I had an old timer MB mechanic give me some hints - like how to preload bearings etc, ensure correct hub packing, put 3 or 4 tablespoons of grease in the hub and smooth out with a spatula so the area between both races are level with grease.

The bit that he warned me against was the kind of grease I was using, the TDS of valvoline cerulean is quite impressive and carries the GC-LB rating, but its quite stringy, The only translation of the advised grease I can do is that its supposed to be like room temperature margarine with no threading. I was told that the stringyness or threading can cause the bearing rollers to churn the grease which will break it down.

I have loads of respect for the old guy as he lives on the other side of the world and does not hesitate to help me out even when its AM hours there, but what OTC grease has that sort of consistency?

googling shows that penzzoil 707l is supposed to be the best grease for this purpose, parts stores dont carry it though. If its like margarine I'll buy one from amazon. Apparently the MB 265.1 datenblatt has greases that are not available retail easily, e.g. it has the chevron starplex EP2 but its quite hard to get

thought I'll add here to help others, If you wish to buy SKF bearings for your 1995 E300D in a retail outlet, NAPA has them, ask them for a no.2 and no.17 set and for the grease seal ask for part no. atm2118445.

These dont come up when they look it up by car type. But they have them. I read out the sizes from the timken catalog.

This is the TDS of the grease I used, It was 4 dollars for the tube at NAPA.

http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/hd_cerulean_grease.pdf

The TDS says the texture to be smooth and tacky. The other bits also are very impressive, very near to the greases mentioned in the MB datenblatt 265.1 - the only head scratcher for me is the texture bit. Isnt smooth supposed to mean short strand or gooey grease.

Can someone have a look. for reference sake - the wheels are running much much cooler now with this new pack job.
