ignition switch removal 1985 190D DIY

Well after searching and getting plenty of assistance from the good people here I have succeeded in removing my ignition switch/lock assembly. The FSM was pretty vague so here goes. I will assume that by now every one knows to dissconect the battery

1. Remove drivers side upper foot well cover by loosening the screws, pry off the brass colored clip at floor.
2. Remove the corrugated black air vent tube. Remove the right hand side, pull off rectangular end piece, push the pipe over the steering column and pull down while wiggling the pipe to disengage the pipe.

3. Reach up and loosen the speedo cable it is the brass knurled nut and is hand tight.

4 push out the gauge cluster from behind, or if you have big hands like mine and cant reach use a Wide pry bar and gently work around the edges untill it pops out.

5 Disconnect the myriad of wires and the oil pressure line...mine is missing the oil pressure line??? Keep track of where it all goes. Set cluster aside.

6 Pull steering wheel. You can do this first if you like. Pull the logo out of the center of the wheel. Spray the bolt with penetrating oil and leave overnight. Wipe off oil and heat bolt with a butane pencil torch just till it's too hot to touch. Use a 10mm hex socket(1/2 drive and high quality, I bent a 3/8 drive craftsman socket before buying a snap on 1/2 inch drive) Unlock the steering wheel lock it can be damaged from the force. Use a 1"x 2" brace between the
floor of the car and the flat of one of the wheel spokes to stop the wheel. Use a good size breaker bar and 'giver heck' Mine broke loose so loudly I thought the board broke. The bolt is covered in blue locktite.
The steering wheel pulls off with out a wheel puller.

7 Remove the turn signals etc by removing the three screws and remove with the "clam shell" I helps if you pull slack in the wires through the wire ties below the dash hang the whole unit off to the side.

8 Remove the two 13mm bolts that secure the steering column to the frame.

9 Remove the 10mm bolt that clamps the ignition lock barrel to the steering column.

10 Remove the 8mm screw that secures the dash just below the ignition key. This will give you a little more wiggle room to move the igniton assembly around.

11 Pry off the trim ring around the ignition tumbler.

12 Turn key to postion "1" push in the small pin which is now visible next to the ignition lock barrel clamp. Rotate the assembly slightly downward. Remove the key once the pin has cleared the hole. Rotate down and pull the steering lock barrel out of the steering column.(requires patience and a bit of wiggling) Pull the assembly outward through the gauge cluster opening. Put key in ignition and turn to position "1" pull off the wiring connector at the back of the ignition switch. Dissconect the key alarm connector and remove the steering lock assembly...Thats it. Have a cold one.

It took me about three hours but with the directions above It would have taken alot less. Hope this helps someone out.
Cheers
