Yes, the 240 fw will fit the 300 crank. the 300 fw is 10# heavier and will offer nicer shifting characteristics and a smoother idle but the lighter 240 fw will work just fine.

Tom is your friend too. Tom, don't you know something about the pilot bearing fitting/not fitting the 300 crank?

By what I see here, rarely found in US, easier to find in europe as a G- class and transporter spare, but not at all cheap. If it's beneficial to have your project done this year instead of next, I'd jump in w/ the 240 D flywheel. Remember to mark your flex plate before you take it off, match balance the FW to it. Seems like a more productive worry to me.

6170320001 OM617 manual flywheel (commonly found number on the internet) 6170300005 OM617 manual flywheel (Russian EPC) 6150301205 OM617 automatic flywheel (Russian EPC) 1150320801 Apparently early OM617 flywheel (I'm not 100% sure about this number though see link below) 1150320601 OM615/OM616 manual flywheel (Commonly found number on the internet) http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/287409-part-number-om617-fly-wheel.html

There are the 617 FW out there in Grey market cars, they come available from time to time. check on E-Bay, CL, and the for sale section of this forum and others.
I found a 617 FW after 3 yrs of searching. Found mine in PNP on a 81 300D Euro. $27. 240D FW`s are more prevalant, and will bolt onto a 300SD W126 engine Crank. they will fit the OM617 engines, Turbo and none Turbo. Charlie

The 85 cranks have a smaller hole in the back where the pilot bearing goes. Some have modified their pilot bearings to fit and some have simply frozen the bearing and heated the crank to get them in.
I concur that the biggest concern is the matching of the flywheels. Mark it on your fw and crank where it goes then have it checked for balance. If it is neutrally balanced which most are and your stick flywheel is neutrally balanced you are good. If either is not neutrally balanced the new flywheel will have to be match balanced to the fw coming off your engine. This is a very important step as a mis match will shake your eye teeth out. It is true the 300 was never offered here in the states with a stick so they originate on euro motors.

A couple of those flywheels on Stretch's list are available from the dealer (or probably from our hosts). The 2nd one lists for $675 and the third one lists for $510 and both are supposedly are available. Unfortunately, they cost a bit more than Charlie's at $27.

If you are lucky enough to find one at the pick and pull you can get the best price. On the open market I value them at from 3 to 400 used. I value the 240 flywheel at from 75 to 125 used.
I got my first 38# flywheel by buying a complete 300 euro parts car for 600. I used the fw, engine and transmission from that one though the engine needed rebuilding. I sold off the seats from it too. I traded for the second.
