What Do You Guys Do With Your Old Parts Cores?

I just replaced the alternator in my vehicle and have been wondering what to do with the old one. Obviously, it can be rebuilt, made like new again by Bosch, and sold for over $100.

The wrecking yard I got the replacement alternator from will give me $5 for my old one. However, I have a feeling they are just going to melt it down for scrap. I'd be happier knowing it was going to live a new life instead of being scrapped.

I think about this a lot when I replace parts. Even though the old parts are worn out, they can usually be rebuilt (though I don't want to do it myself).

I wouldn't mind shipping my old parts off to someone, but I don't want to pay for shipping. I'd love to send my old alternator back to Bosch so it can become a "Premium remanufactured".

I usually forget to turn them in and lose the $$. Then 4-5 years later, after moving them several times from state to state, I end up throwing them out.

I'd find a rebuild place and drop it off there. Any alternator shop will give you more than $5 for a "clean but dead" unit.

Or take it in to have it rebuilt and then keep it on your shelf or sell it.

After checking my PMs, apparently another option is to send it to another forum member to rebuild. Sounds better than taking it in to the wrecking yard and watching it get shot-putted onto a pile of junk!

I keep everything, rusty old Rotors Calipers, manifolds, nuts/bolts, greasy old engines, fenders, hoods, doors and .....and.... then when I kick off the kids can worry about all the junk the old fart kept, and why?

I pulled a few W123 and W126 front Rotors along with the Hubs. too difficult to remove them in the yards, so just leave them on.
I brought some of my old Rotors with me the next time i went back to the yard to get my Core charge back. well they didn`t have a Hub attached so couldn`t get a core back. I was charged the Core for the Rotor, not the Hub, but they still wouldn`t give me the core charge, co. policy.

What exactly causes Alts to fail if its not the v reg? Ive never opened one up but I imagine its a cracked contact or the diodes have failed. Im going to start keeping them but I wonder if the bearings can go two lives

many things can fail on an alt aside from the regulator.

bearings for one, the brushes can dig into the armature/slip rings destroying them, the windings can lose their insulation, if the bearing is bad enough, the rotor can contact the windings destroying them, the diode pack/rectification circuit can fail, I'm sure there are other problems that can occur too...

I put my used parts on shelves in my garage next to bottles of used motor oil.

Back in the Day

when I was Biker Trash, I had a parts tree in the back yard. I decorated it with clapped out Harley parts. There were a lot of them as I recall.

For parts like starters and alternators I have usually taken apart old units to learn how they work - sometimes repaired them too. Makes it easy to understand any later problems.

a good teaching book and a working example makes excellent practice.

Ditto!

Buy two of the repair parts as it is easier to keep around a couple of diodes, bearings and a voltage regulator than multiple alternators. Many of these parts universally fit other makes as well.

We have an excellent alternator/starter shop here in town and I'd drag it over to a place like that. BTW - no way would I spend Bosch money for a rebuild when my local guys are just as good for a TON less money - but that's another story.

Guys talk about rebuilding your own and of course you can. The question is how many hours do you have in your day? I'm retired and I don't have time to do everything I'd like to so I let the pros do the rebuilds and I put engines in where they don't belong.

Brake drums, rotors, etc., you ask. When I get a pile I drag them to the metal recyclers and they hand me crisp dollar bills for them. I LIKE that!

I'll ask Coastal Rebuilders next time I'm over that way.
