The good news is that most of those components are standard electronic components available at Radio Shack or a local electronic supply house. The key is finding a schematic. I don't know if such a schematic can be found in the FSM or not.

It would be easier to find a replacement.

Of course it also doubles the chance of getting a wrong answer.

Reminds me of my flying days. Compared to a single engine airplane, a multi-engine plane provides some redundancy in the event of a failure... of course it comes at a price, since there is twice as much to go wrong!

Considering my options here -- many thanks to you all.

If I didn't need to drive the car I would definitely take a look at the solenoid contact.

Incidentally, I have what I think is positive proof that the temp sensor DOES run data through the relay. There are seven contacts in the plug. Five check out as glow plug contacts, the seventh is unknown (Any guesses, please?), and the sixth produces consistent temp gauge readings and w/out contact the needles drops to no reading.

Here is the schematic of the glow relay... at least on an '85

Why the washer motor is tied in through the glow relay is a real mystery to me... maybe the kind of logic used in running the tach through the EGR controller.

Does that mean that your relay looks nothing like the pictures posted in this thread?

It definitely doesn't match the '85 schematic above, and it doesn't remotely match up to the relay I got off of an '82 parts wagon. They seem to have changed relay wiring/function nearly once a year...

The 80 300D and the 80 240D have a GP relay that has the 3 legs, not the flat sided one like the later years. for some odd reason they cost quite a bit more.

The may have been wired different, don`t know for sure.

here it is:
Glow plug relay upgrade

the instructions are for an W116 SD but should be very similar for a D or TD

Id still like to see a true schematic of the GP relay. The one shown before is just a block diagram.

From what Ive seen there are many different models from MB for the GP relay. They all have several electrolytic capacitors and a couple of either transistors or triac type devises. Ive got several non working GP relays that I will be swapping parts in when it warms up enough.

Ive spoken with Hella and they will not release their OEM schematic. Had no luck with MB either.
