1984 performance issues.

Ok I recently got a 1984 300d turbo for $935. I have been having issues with the fact that I only seem to have power when I have the pedal to the floor with my leg muscles pressing it down quite hard. Even then my power is not that great. (I also have a noticeable lag between pedal application and power showing up but I am thinking that may be due to it being a diesel.)

Just put a replacement vacuum pump on it due to the fact that the old one was not working (It came out in pieces. I was glad I did not try to order a rebuild kit.)

I went to clean out the banjo bolt and found that it is tied directly to the alda rather than going through the switchover valve. I went ahead and cleaned it although it was not plugged. Had some very sticky tar on it. After I did so I hooked a meter I had bought for the vacuum system up to that line. See below for a youtube video of the results.

Here is a pic of the gauge so you can see the scales.

Is that anywhere near what I need to be? I doubt it is so what do I need to check next? I have also changed fuel filters.

Was that 2lbs of boost at WOT? My bet is that it is NOT the turbo itself but something else...

Other questions
  • Fuel Filters (tank screen, primary and secondary)
  • Air Filters
  • Injectors
  • Timing
  • Smoke?
It is possible that the PO figured that the switchover valve was bad and bypassed it. Have you tried removing/adjusting the alda?

I am sure the question of valve adjustment will come up as well. When you have it floored are the linkages pulling the IP to the stop?

fairly close yes. I can try and get the gauge in the car to show the tach as well if needed.

  • Fuel Filters (tank screen) Only swapped the two engine compartment ones.
  • Air Filters It looked clean but I have not done anything past look at it.
  • Injectors Not sure what your asking here.
  • Timing. Not done anything to or checked this. Was gonna do a valve adjustment in a couple weeks and check then.
  • Smoke? None except for the few times it was real cold and I had to crank it a ton to get it to start. It was a light greyish smoke and I assumed it was just unburned fuel from cranking that much.

Not touched the alda. I was under the impression that if touched before everything else got eliminated it could mess with te moter and screw it up.

For the injectors I was just wondering if they had been done.
Cold start issues could indicate a compression problem (blow by?)

How many lbs of boost do you get if you bypass the alda and the switchover and just go from the banjo to the gauge? you could have a stuck wastegate....

When you pull on the throttle linkages does the motor respond quickly? When I had a clogged fuel system it was laggy. People talk about diesel purge, i just run biodiesel and that seems to have cleaned things up nicely...

As for ALDAs there seems to be two camps. "The mercedes engineers are gods never change anything" camp and the "hey turn that and see what blows up" camp. I guess we all have to decide were we stand. Me I prefered the smoother acceleration of an adjusted alda.

For me, I would want to ensure I have decent compression (valve adjustment, compression test, check you gp's while you got'em out to fix the cold start problem). Then I'd tackle the fuel system.
