This is at a cheapie gas station. Cheap regular was like $4.48 but diesel was. $7.46.

My 84 300D has been in the driveway with all of the stuff needed to replace a cylinder head gone and the radiator and so on. With the diesel fuel so high I am wondering if I should even bother fixing it.

I hope the high diesel price will at least get the alternative fuel companies a boost.

Oh no!
Do you know why it's getting such poor mileage?

Post Decisions & Poor Fuel Economy

If you liked driving your 300D then yes, of course you should fix it and do all those "Might As Wells" too .

OTOH if not let it go .

I'm pretty sure my fuel economy issue is late injection Pump timing coupled with really late up shifting of the slushbox transmission ~ I'm driving it and it runs smooth as silk (freshly rebuilt engine, WOOT) but no one seems to know how to time the I.P. so I'm going to have to do that my owndamnself .

Not to worry, I'll brag, whine or cry right here depending on how it all turns out .

Took a trip to Santa Barbara last week, on I-5 and US-101, but in our gas minivan. In general, diesel was cheaper than regular unleaded, but varies widely. I saw from $4.35/gal to $5.70/gal, while cheapest RUG was $4.37/gal. Perhaps some stations have older stock and price it based on what they paid. In Sacramento, I prefer Propel HPR Renewable Diesel, which is $4.43/gal, slightly cheaper than off-brand RUG. My engine runs smoother, quieter, and without the smell of D2. Works in any diesel (no mod's), subsidized via carbon-credits (93% carbon-neutral). Union76 also sells renewable (R99), but $5.20/gal last I checked.

I noticed that cheaper diesel at other name-brand stations tends to be B20 (20% biodiesel). Unlike "renewable", which is chemically converted from ag-waste to not gel until same temperatures as D2, B20 might gel though perhaps no concern in Summer. Anybody know any downsides of using B20? Slightly poorer mileage? I understand some owners prefer it due to higher cetane and/or lubricity.

B20 is not a problem with the older vehicles except for long term storage as it tends to accumulate more water making a more microbe friendly environment. Now if you have a newer Bluetec engine then B-20 is not recommended.

Post Salt Into Open Wounds

I was listening to the NEWS on NPR last night as my Ranger's fuel gauge dipped perilously close to "E" and they said that gas prices are on the rise again, the 'average price' for gas in California is thirty cents more than anywhere I can find in So. Cal. .

Good thing I don't own any gas hogs .
