Bench test with no gel to show throw and output, way too bright for practical use and leds dont dim easily so either a color change to something less harsh or less lights your choice.

Replacing the individual lights with LED's works well too.

I had that same idea a while ago, I think it would work pretty well

Someone did it a while ago, I have no idea where the thread it. My favorite was having 4x amber leds in there. The glow in the cabin made it feel like I was driving a tank at night.

Ooh i like that idea a lot just one or two black light leds would be more than enough to pick up dots of luminescent paint placed on the gauge faces. Blue glow overlit with red would be really neat. might try this when i can find a cluster at the yard. Here is mine in red. There is one small dark spot caused by the crystals not being glued down yet. I tried yellow as well that was nice very bright but not harsh just didnt like the color as much as the red. my apologies for my bad camera.

Blue LEDs give the effect of black light, I'll see if I can dig up some photos. My blue LEDs are wayyyy overkill for it, I love really bright dash lights in general but I imagine someone else would not find it as appealing.

Personally, I would touch up the paint on the needles first, before deciding on the color for lighting. I noticed the red led's really wash out the needles, making them hard to differentiate.
My preference is for fairly dim lighting, for night vision, and needle color that "pops out".

For pop a couple true blacklight leds not just blue but ultraviolet and some luminescent "glow" paint would give a nice contrast kinda like an old day-glo watch
