Blower Motor Question: 240D
My blower motor is acting up. It wasn't running & I was going to check wiring & everything. Then I got in the passenger side of the car, pulled the door shut & the motor kicked on.
Turned the switch off & let the fan spin all the way down. Turned the switch back on, fan didn't come on. Opened door again & shut it. Fan came on. 3rd time. Opened door lightly & lightly shut it. Fan didn't come on. Gave the dash a good whap. Fan started up. (reminds me of whacking the side of the old TV's to get the picture right). Also, if I turn off power to the fan & then turn the switch back on before it's spun all the way down it starts right back up. So, question is: Is this motor brushes going out? The actual motor going out? Or possibly an electrical connection somewhere loose?

I don't know if they are all the same but once the Kick Panel below the Dash is removed you can see the Blower Housing and the Electrical Connector for the Blower. You could pull off the Connector and use some Jumper Wires to see how the Motor turns connected directly to the Battery. If you look at the Motor Brush Replacement threads you will see that on the Bosch Motor the Brushes are in the Rear of the Motor and can be seen. I have a Seimens Motor and the Brushes are up front anc cannot be seen without removing the Fan/Cage. On mine once the Electrical Connector was of there was only 3 screws holding the Platic Housing and the whole Housing came out. If you do that you can move the whole thing up near the Car Battery to use the Jumper Wires. On mine the Motor is enclosed by the Plastic Housing but I have seen pics where the Motor hangs exposed and there is a Plate separating the Motor from the Fan/Cage.

More than likely it is the Brushes. Do a search of replacing the brushes and how to replace them. they are not available from the dealer. there is mention of sourcing them from Ace hardware, will have to file them to work.
There is also a thread on replacing the motor with one for a Volvo. think it is around $100. You don`t want to buy a new one, think $300 on up. When I got the 240, ours didn`t work either, I pulled one from PNP. been working fine for the past 3 yrs. Charlie

The Brushes are more easily sanded down by laying the sand paper on a flat surface than they are filed.
Note the Siemens Motor has Bronze Brushes and the Bosch has Carbon Brushes. The Carbon Brushes are easily sanded to size. I found a pic of where to lube the Motor with the Sewing Machine or 2 in one Oil. I needed to Pull the Fan/Cage to at the other bearing and in My case the Brushes.
