84 300TD Won't Crank..??

I have had this awesome 300TD and have had no problems at all and I mean none but got in the wagon last week at the golf course ready to go, turned the key and nothing. I removed the battery had it checked and charged thinking it was dead and the battery is fine ..still nothing... So turning the key will not make the starter engage I was hoping for a few ideas as my TD is kind of new to me.... thanks

Jump terminals 1 and 3 in the junction box on top of the fender in front of the battery and report back.

If it cranks OK when you jumper the Terminals; see this thread as it has pics of where to bypass the Neutral Safety Switch.

Ok ... jumped the terminals and it started right up ... But now it cranks every time using the key, what in the world... Did cranking the TD move an electrical contact or what..??
My next question is... I realise this is stupid but is it fixed or was it an electrical glitch or is there something I need to replace... thanks for your advice quys.

My 84' 300td does the same thing. Sometimes the starter won't engage. Mine is very random though seems to happen more when the car is hot then cold.

Not atypical behavior when the contacts inside the ignition switch are dirty. Just keep a short piece of wire in the car to jump the terminals the next time it happens.

It depends on what is going on.

If you turn the Ignition Key and hear the Starter Solenoid Click but nothing else happens there is a good chance the Contacts inside of the Starter Solenoid that connect it to the Brushes are burned or there is something in the Lingages connected to the Starter solenoid preventing it from reaching the Contacts inside of the Solenoid.

I think the Starter Solneoid could click and the Starter Brushes also be worn or not making enough contact to rotate the Starter.

I think the Neutral Safety Switch or those Shifter Bushings could cause intermittant problem before they go out completely.
The next time it does not Crank insead of jumpering the Wire Terminal Block. Jumper that Connector inside of the Car where you can bypass the Neutral Safety Switch. If it starts after that you have a Neutral Safety Switch or a Shifter Bushing issue.

Ignition Switch; in the pic in the red square the Metal Contact Dis that is supposed to be on the Let side is gone. The right side one is still there. This Switch was still working OK but it is clear that it was on the way out.

I never bothered to investigate if that particular Contact went to crank the Starter or not. It was the only contact that was that bad.
