jack stands

I've got an 82 240D that I need to do some work under. Where is a safe jacking point for the front and back of the car and also a place to use jack stands?

A safe jack point in the rear is where the suspension wishbone joins together. Place the jackstand under the pad at the lower corner of each rear door (right under the hole for the factory jack).

Under the front, put a block of wood on top of your jack so you don't damage the frame, then jack under the frame. Place the jackstands at the lower corner of the front doors where there is a pad.

Jack the front end first, and make sure the car is in gear with the e-brake on. Also, chock the front and back of all four wheels until the car is completely off the ground.

If possible, it's best to have a helper present to alert you to any shifting which may occur as you're jacking. It's challenging and takes a good bit of time to jack all four corners of the car off the ground. Take your time and be safe.

If you have a floor jack, use the differential and engine cross member, place stands at the jack points.

When you say jack points you do mean where you use the factory jack?

In the rear I always set them on a piece of wood under the subframe mount point (big bolt head with a round metal piece surrounding it with holes in it).

In front I support at the normal pads under the jack points.

I try to use my ramps whenever possible however.

I have tried a few different ways and the best I have found (assuming the front wheels don't need to turn) is to use ramps for the front, and then jack the differential to place stands under the mounts that connect the rear sub frame to the chasis. Caution: you may have to push the car forward occasionally while lifting the rear.

If you raise the front high enough with trans in gear, you're gonna break something.

This is what I use but I place the jack stands under the front frame beams. I will not go under the car unless there are two jack stands at either corner plus the floor jack.

As folks can see, there are numerous places, depending on what you need to get at.

The frame, lower control arm, just be careful where to place them.

And before you get under it, shake the car well to make sure it's stable.

steel jackstands can rupture the pads below the MB jack points. use wood to spread the load. also if there is ANY rust in the area, DO NOT USE STANDS THERE!!!

I like to connect to the control arm mounts with a jack stand. SOLID steel there. in the rear, the stands go just inside the subframe rail!
