240D a/c compressor upgrade questions
 

So our new to us 240D has a slow a/c leak out the of the compressor (possible rear seal or orings to lines or machining cap), I have been reading about upgrades to a Sanden compressor could someone please point me in the right direction as to where to find said compressors with a model application or place to purchase. I am new to a/c, never had it in the shops I worked in (refridgerant machines that is) so it is not something I am 100% fluent...and the 240 needs the most help it can get so a compressor that robs less hp would be great! I see the mounting kit offered, but want to know which compressor in "simple english"!!! Thanks

Do a search for "Sanden" and Rollguy. His information about this usually pops up on page 1 of this forum. If you don't see the "exact" information you are looking for, he is great about answering any questions you have. Post it in the thread and it may answer questions that others may have and haven't asked.

I noticed you are in Canada. You may have to get in touch with some of the other folks here that reside in your "neck of the woods" about where to buy.

I see some of his info, but the level of compressor knowledge is way over my head when it comes to Sanden models, I have a bunch of SD714 compressors kicking around in the scrap pile from TDI VWs, good compressors that have no home anymore! But not sure how to interpret if they fit etc/what I am looking for. Old cars are not available in the local scrap yards, nothing much pre 2000 shows up, 80s is very rare to find-meaning most compressors are modern and serpentine belt driven. Just need a mentor on the topic!

FYI, I contacted klimakit before I found ROLLGUY's kit. They have no 240d conversion kits in stock and won't until the end of summer, at least.

Rollguy's kit is very well engineered. Looking forward to getting it all connected over this weekend!

So I checked out some of the info, but would I buy a compressor locally still no part numbers for a/c compressors etc in common speak. Still reading up though...

ROLLGUY can get you the whole enchilada (I think that's the whole shebang to you Cannucks). He will work with you though if you want to do some of the purchasing (compressor, hoses) locally.

I just wanted to mention that I have been able to stop leaks from the rear seals by slightly loosening the 15mm bolt that holds the port on the compressor and reseating it, then re-tightening. Doesn't work if the stepped port seals or o-rings have failed (cracked), but if the compressor wiggled around too much and the port shifted, this can solve the problem.

Be VERY careful and wear eye and hand protection. The refrigerant in there is under pressure and if you yank too hard, it will come shooting out at you.

The old York compressor (If that's what you have) is pretty tough. Might still be workable.

And if not, an adapter plate is available to mount a Sanden on the existing mounting plate. The belt idler is still retained, but new hoses will need to be made....Rich

My big problem is dealing with customs etc being in Canada, shipping parts down (core hoses etc) makes a nightmare. Finding local talent that is responsible for their work is another issue, it is hard enough to find someone that will work on an old car let alone custom fabrication that will actually work in the end (I used to work in a shop that did numerour "projects", the amount of bad workmanship I saw for fabbing fuel cells etc was incredible, people could not even deliver a leak free gas tank built to our dimensions, even after two attempts, same for custom turbo oil plumbing, just headaches!). I will ask around first about having house ends refitted etc before I order parts, my welding is not good enough to try on parts that I cannot ever find again around here!
Rollguy your new compressor has thread on hoses? Could a bolt on hose set up not be used like the factory set up (Delco-1982 240D).

The compressors come with standard #8 & #10 O ring fittings. Any hose supply and some A/C shops can make the hoses. It is possible to use the stock manifold with a different head, but some modifications will be needed (a member here has done it). If you are using the stock condenser, a custom fitting will need to be made (#10 FM O ring with #8 barb). However, if you use a PF condenser, standard fittings can be used (#6 & #8). You can probably source everything there with the exception being the compressor mounting bracket kit.....Rich
