#18. Test your MB parts knowledge

This is a bit tougher.

Can you identify the failure that made this mess?

The item that failed? Or who's car it was? I know both.

Obviously the glove box light bulb is burned out, which triggered the driver alert oil spray warning.

you are missing the part that most likely CAUSED the leaking part to fail...

Part failure? It just looks like someone spilled Starbucks coffee in there.

I can't tell from the picture. I'll bet I could have found it if I had seen the car for real.

Here's how I went about it:

I have no idea. -- Out for obvious reasons
Ruptured A/C hose.
Ruptured radiator hose.
Ruptured fuel return hose.
Ruptured transmission hose.
Ruptured power steering hose.
Ruptured engine oil cooler hose.
Ruptured bumper shock absorber.
Leaking turbo oil feed tube. -- Out because this looks like more than just a leak.
Leaking oil filter O-ring. -- Out because this looks like more than just a leak.

Ruptured A/C hose.
Ruptured radiator hose. -- Wrong fluid color
Ruptured fuel return hose.
Ruptured transmission hose. -- Wrong fluid color
Ruptured power steering hose.
Ruptured engine oil cooler hose.
Ruptured bumper shock absorber. -- There would be more mess around the bumper and less under the hood.

Ruptured A/C hose. -- I can't explain why, but I just didn't find this very compelling. I guess I don't see the A/C system holding that much oil
Ruptured fuel return hose. -- No, that area actually looks pretty clean.

Ruptured power steering hose.
Ruptured engine oil cooler hose.

Ruptured power steering hose. -- Going with my gut, seeing that there is a LOT of whatever it is around the oil cooler hose, and noticing a new-looking oil cooler hose, I nix this one.
Ruptured engine oil cooler hose. -- Seems much more probable than a busted power steering hose.

Afterward (I don't scroll down until I've picked my answer ), I notice vstech commenting that:

After an oil/ filter change, cold oil pressure can exceed 100 psi.

Now that I am looking at the pic on the computer (instead of phone) where I can see better details, I think this was Tyler's 85 300D after an oil /filter change.

The power steering belt snapped and cut open the oil cooler line, which spewed oil all over the left side of the car, even into the headlight doors. And the windshield and driver if the window was open.
