Vroom, Vroom... I got my 87 190D 2.5 Turbo!

ok, it's a little rough, dings on every surface, paint faded (what 87 doesn't have some?) no spare, bolt missing from driver's seat, E-brake button missing, no toolkit, no antenna at all... tiny gasser battery attached, belt tensioner cockeyed a bit, and get this...

501380 miles... YEAH BABY!!!
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-m...o/IMG_1698.JPG

the car drives like a DREAM!!! shifts oddly, like it's advancing through the gears too rapidly, but the little car handles it with aplomb! I've not had this much fun driving a car since I drove my father's corvette!

I installed a new tensioner, and took it to get titled. I'm driving it all day today, and I'll get some pictures when I get home.

This should fix that shifting issue:

what year is that pic from? Mine does not have the coin tray like yours, my window buttons are there...

vstech 10-02-2013 03:19 PM

oh yeah... the a/c does not work... YET!

I'm sure I'll compile more issues as I go...

That's the early dash, '84-'85 and maybe 86. I've got an '87 2.5dt with a 5-speed swapped in and can get up near 40 mpg's on interstate driving where it got low 30's when it had the auto.

Do you think the 1/2 mil miles are on the original motor?

vstech 10-02-2013 03:39 PM

looks that way.
the maintenance book goes all the way to 320K... no mention of a motor before then, and the engine bay looks unmolested.
however, the belt tensioner was original MB, with the plastic covers still present!!! and I have ZERO belief that it's been on there 501K... so it's possible the motor was swapped at some point.

it appears the alda is either bypassed, or adjusted out significantly. I get some black smoke if I get on it hard... and I have yet to feel any turbo lag...

I remember that car from craigslist. I think its the same guy I test drove a 95 e300d with. Waxhaw import guy.

I know you are going to have a blast with that.

vstech 10-02-2013 04:02 PM

import guy eh? that's not the story I got from him, but it did come from craigslist, and it was in waxhaw...

Could be a euro too, my 1990 has that console.

I want a 190 2.5 turbo! I bet its a bit faster than my 2.2 ;) :D

I think my 420 would still win though. :D

I love My 2.5T!!! My 617 tractor was great but man these more "modern" cars are slick!

tjts1 10-02-2013 06:36 PM

Congrats on the purchase. Get a set of delrin shifter bushings on 190rev for that puppy and it'll feel like a brand new car.

vstech 10-04-2013 08:53 PM

Okay I upgraded the front rotors brake calipers to 124 brake rotors and calipers
Went from my looks like a 10.5 to 11 and a half inch rotors and calipers now take the full size pads and it looks like it looks nice we'll see how it works
