arrgh... 87 190D 2.5turbo can't shift into park

... ok, now my shifter won't go into park.
I pulled the top off, and looked down into the pivot area, and pulled out a penny and a nickel, but it still won't go into park. I crawled under, and the linkage is not hitting anything, so, I'm thinking there is an issue with the pawl... great.
sometimes it will go into park, others not... WTF???

anybody know the transmission problem I've got?

Separate the two parts of the linkage at the transmission end and operate each in turn to identify which is at fault

There is a piston that keeps you from going into reverse and Park at speed. It would only require taking the valve body off to check. 2nd to last resort. Last resort would be of course, to put a manny tranny in that bad boy

But it does partially confirm the piston theory

ok, what am I in for?

oh, and today the car's starter would not even click... I beat on it, and bypassed the NSS, no change... got in the car, sat down, and it started like nothing was wrong...

From what I've learned from working on my 722.418, the secondary pump on the transmission can seize up and cause problems. On my 418 this might have been the cause of my governor gears breaking, or it could have just been age. I'm not 100% sure. The 418 design used plastic gears, I believe you have a 400 series in there as well so, maybe you have plastic too. My first problem was the loss of 2,3,4th gears as a result of governor. My second problem was the governor popping out of its bore.

Summary of what I did:

-drop the back half of the transmission
-drop the exhaust
-drop driveshaft
-remove governor bore cover
-pull out governor
-replace governor plastic gear
-remove tailshaft cover
-replace plastic gear on output shaft
-collect old gear parts
-reassemble tailshaft assembly
-reinstall governor
-reattach driveshaft, exhaust, transmission
-test drive, gears OK, then shifter wont go from D->P.
-drop all that crap again
-get governor out, find out its not secured in its bore
-take off secondary pump, gut all parts out of it, reinstall.
-reinstall governor with awesome snap ring pliers
-test drive, good to go.

On a 201 you might not be able to get the transmission low enough to work on the governor bore area...

Here is the thread with pics!

Hm. I was hoping to pull my governor to check it... I wonder how much work that is in the W126

You would have the most room of all. I was able to get the B2 piston on my my 300SD. I think the governor is in back further and on the opposite side..So you might find that you only need to drop the back half of the transmission. Its been a long time since I've been near the trans on a 126.

If you haven't done the basics and checked the selector linkage yet you could be wasting a lot of time.
