OM601 Afterglow
I would like my '85 190D to have "afterglow" for these cold winter days. I understand the OM602 and late OM603 engines had afterglow but the OM601 does not. I'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade and what parts are required besides the relay for everything to work (including the glow light being accurate).

Cheap afterglow - disconnect the purple wire in the small 4-pin connector at the glow relay. This will cut the starter signal that tells the relay to stop glowing and you'll get the full glow count every time.
OE afterglow - get the afterglow relay from a 90-93 300D 2.5, add an afterglow temp sensor to the fifth pin in the expanded small 5-pin connector at the glow relay. One caveat is I don't know if the relay will notice a missing glow plug and use the dash glow light to indicate a fault. But the glow feature will work. Sixto 87 300D |

My 87 190D 2.5 is the OM602 and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have afterglow. It's probably just the W124 that had it, and maybe not even all of them had it.

US MB Diesels from 1990 have afterglow and inclined injectors. The '87 190D 2.5 turbo is an odd duck with inclined injectors so it might have afterglow as we'll. The telltale is 5 pins in the glow relay small connector.

Mine few coins...
![]() The OM601 versions with afterglow: CH-version (for Switzerland) from MY1988 A-version (for Austria) and "Berlin taxi"-version (code 830) from MY1989 Ciao! ![]() |

Yes. The 87 190 turbo has the angled injection and after glow relay with the five pin connector.

Well then, it seems I should be searching on eBay Switzerland/Austria for the right parts! Do you happen to know the part numbers? I already know I'm never gonna find a 300D 2.5 at the junkyard anyway.

Ah, yes, another thing. If the car has a transmission amplifier, it'll likely have a 50*C switch ahead of the thermostat where the afterglow temp sensor goes. You might be able to use the EDS temp sensor position on the upper radiator hose attachment if you EGR isn't working anymore, get a dual function gauge sender/glow relay sensor, or fit a sensor on the head in a blank location for which you'll also need an adapter like the gauge sender uses. Or do the purple wire mod.
