Crazee broken windshield wipers

300cd--85
yes the ice storm froze the linkage apparantly and the passenger side works somewhat--and the driver side will work momentarily if given help- but they wont work together anymore, whats the easy fix for this dilema?

Did you accidentally run the wipers when they were frozen up?

You'll have to remove the center cowl and inspect the linkage.

I bought a car that had the same thing when I drove it home in the snow. Quite an adventure.

In my case, a complete linkage set up from a jy donor car was the answer. Some of the joints are press fitted on making a repair nigh impossible.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Before pulling the cowl-vents or panel, check the alloy wiper arms where the nuts hold them to the shafts. Sometimes they'll break loose if they're started while blocked by ice. They might have enough 'meat' left to simply re-tighten them.

I didn't "accidentally " run them when they were frozen--I just ran them. never been an issue before bcause we only get an ice storm here once every 3 yrs or so and I did not even expect this system would be _underbuilt_ on one of these cars.......................

I just did the same thing-we had a bit of freezing rain last night and the passenger side stuck to the windshield when I stupidly turned the wipers on. Now only the drivers side works. I’m really surprised and disappointed that something broke so easily-what a pain in the ass.

There is a cone shaped clutch made to slip if the wipers are frozen. It is held together with those nuts..... I'd try tightening them.

I loosened the nut and pried the wiper arm off the shaft. I don’t know what it looked like when it was new, but it appeared that whatever splines it might have had were just about gone. Putting the arm back on and tightening the nut snugly did the trick, though. Won’t be switching the wipers on anymore unless I’m sure they’re not stuck to the glass and the snow is cleared off completely.

The splined shaft is steel, and I believe it makes splines in the alloy wiper arm when you tighten the nut. I've seen these wear the hole in the arm excessively if they worked loose repeatedly, or were operated loose too long.
Then just tightening the nut may not prevent slippage anymore. Adding a washer under the nut usually fixes this.
With the arm off, it's also a good idea to clean the splines on the shaft with a sharp pick. But you'll probably be OK.
