617 and Water/Meth?
I have used water or water/meth injection on cummins, powerstroke, and duramax engins with good success. Fairly significant power can be made, and some mileage improvements too. I was thinking about doing a kit on my 300d, but haven't decided. I have seen that a few people on this site have used water injection on 617's, but haven't seen any detailed reports. I wasn't sure if the 617 responded as well as the newer light duty diesels. One issue that I have seen with some of the home made kits here is that they use low pressure pumps, and lower end nozzles. I have seen much better performance with high pressure and good nozzles. Anyone have any feedback with using a setup like this?

These are not so much power adders as they are a means to control the thermal stress on an over fueled engine. True, there is a BTU benefit from the use of methanol, but the main benefit is from its tremendous latent heat. Water, of course, adds no power at all, it just keeps the pistons from melting. If you're not going to add significant power, I don't see any benefit to it, especially with the cost of methanol combined with its propensity to corrode certain metals and to absorb water.

I use devil's own, just H2O, but I burn WVO and I use it for cleaning. I have a high PSI pump, 200, but low volume nozzle, e.g, .75 gph. I will say that it adds "some" power simply because water is the best heat sink. Any real power? I don't think so.

I felt butt dyno power when I ran 5GPH, others have dynoed and seen 10ish-20ish? hp gains.
You can run ethanol if it's easier to get, or just windshield washer fluid. A high pressure pump should run you $100, solenoid $30, and nozzles are ~$15 on mcmaster.

Universal Stage 1 : Methanol Injection Kits : DevilsOwn Alcohol Injection I'm definitely planning on adding one at some point, for various reasons. Beats running a bunch of pipes all over for an intercooler if you're worried about heat. Plus you get a constant steam-clean, plus the mild power gain of methanol. Win-win-win. -Rog |

I am surprised to hear that not much power has been gained with this engine compared to others that I have run water/meth on. I figured that if I could make 100hp on a 5.9-6.6L, that a 3.0L may be in the 50hp range... How big of tanks have you guys been using on your kits? My thoughts are to use a progressive two stage kit to inject a small amount at very low pressure, and ramp it up to a high amount at max boost. Was thinking about a tank in the 2-3gal range that would last a couple of tanks of diesel.

Where is the best place on the 617 to install a water-meth system?
PS: Cummins, after driving a Subaru Impreza STi for many years where Methanol is often used ... I picked up a 617-powered 300SD Turbo Diesel. Snow Performance has a universal kit for Mercedes Diesel including ours: Snow Performance : All Models ... no affiliation. Their FAQ is listed on http://www.snowperformance.net/faqs_type.php?type=diesel Last edited by Cejpat; 01-22-2014 at 09:19 PM. |
