Close encounter...

Of the nice kind. We were able to follow and enjoy this beautiful W123 for a few miles on the NJ GSPW this afternoon. Camera shot stinks (iphone) but the car was really nice. Beautiful paint as well as wheels and body in general. No rust on the car that I could see anyway, even the jack points seemed rust free, crack free dashboard too.
The only thing I dind't care for was the aftermarket taillights (yes, I forgive you ) and euro headlights.
I was wondering the whole time if the driver/owner is a member here. If you are, I am the crazy guy in the red Tundra who gave you the thumbs up
Nice looking Merc, hope you enjoy it!

The last W123 like that was built in what, 1984/85? Just think - that car is 30 or more years old, and running the expressways like nobody's business. Many of us have moved on from this and other vintage model MB diesels. I did 15 years ago from my W126 '83 300SD.

Exactly what I said to my wife. The car is an 85 at the very best (last year produced) and it was driving 75-80 MPH down the highway like any of us were. I still crave a W123 and now that my wife likes them it sort of gives me hope.

Picture it in Manila Beige with original taillights and North American headlights, and that's what my car looks like (OK, there's a crack on the dashboard). Back when I bought my 300D I thought it drove quite nicely in the city. Then I took it on the interstate and found it to be even better there. The w123 is just an enormously comfortable long-distance vehicle.

Where will other cars be in thirty years? I've thought that many times about other people's cars, particularly when they drive/pass me like idiots. "Yeah, hurry and floor it on your way to the junkyard, fool. Just don't take me with you."

I'm up in North Jersey, 1983 300D manilla beige also, and I drive mine in the snow rather than my F350.
Better ride and much better mileage.

Ha good to know Im not the only one who car stalks people. I love to see older cars that still are appreciated and driven! There are really very few vehicles that can chew through highway miles like an old Mercedes will. The fact these cars weigh 2.5+ tons lends to such a smooth ride. They don't soak up the bumps, they crush them flat! Think its a repaint on that 300 or really well cared for original?

The driver was a younger guy, I'd say late 20's at the most. I'd dare to say he has been retoring that car (or someone else if he wasn't the owner) The wheels were repainted for sure, way too shiny. If the uncracked dash in it is original, I wouldn't doubt the paint is too, may have been touched up idk.
I stalk old cars and ocasionaly motorcicles on the road all the time LOL, old cars run in my DNA despite the brand.

My first evening out with the 240D, I exchanged smiles and waves from an oncoming w123, young and pretty ladies too!

I guess I don't think too much about running my two cars on the interstate. You would have gotten a kick out of me in my '85 W123, my friend Rich in his '84 W123, and Manny in his '84 W201 all cruising together on Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix. We kept an 80mph pace, except the one time Manny decided to test his top speed!

The picture in my signature is from when we made it safely back to Tucson!
