1978 300CD//Steering Box

Hello all-

Had a little slack in the wheel, so I backed off the nut, turned the adjustment screw about a 1/2 turn ccw, and re tightened the nut. Wheel slack is better now, and at least do-able until I replace the front end parts in a month or two.

This was done a couple days ago. Tonight I noticed fluid leaking out the screw...and the fluid in the reservoir looks kind of frothy. The nut is tight, so not sure how it's leaking. Could hear some a little "groaning" in the PS when turning.

Any idea's on my next step?

Lance-

You can destroy the gear box, if you don't adjust it correctly....

I have said it over and over again, do not touch that screw, until you have replace all the steering components and got a proper alignment...

I have no idea what you may had done, the groan is usually it being low on fluid but if you tighten it to far....you may have done something internally...

I hope you can fix the problem, the gear box is very expensive compare to the hundred or two the steering components costs.

Well you'll find information about the seal here =>

Probably more work than you want to do though - still I encourage all to be adventurous!

Failing that, see towards the end of the thread contributions by martureo - he will probably be able to supply you with a replacement steering box if you think it is necessary.

For the frothiness - if your return line (in particular) is moist then it is probably time to think about new power steering lines. If fluid gets out air gets in. Not cheap to replace but if you don't, you might get little bits of rubber in the pump control valve and then the pump don't pump - bits of rubber appear to attract gunk which tend to settle in the steering box; which in turn advances wear.
