Rear spring isolator pads

Hello all,

Quick question... separate link so it doesn't get lost. On the rear suspension there are new rubber spring isolators available, but they come in three flavors: 8 MM, 13 MM, and 18 MM

Why the different thickness values, and which one should I get?

That depends on the ride height you want.

Officially it depends on the ride height you measure - you are meant to adjust the ride height to the correct height by changing the pad thicker or thinner ones accordingly.

Working from memory. There are 3 thicknesses. There are 1,2 or 3 little bumps on them to distinguish the thickness. SDs look like they ride high in the front. I have the thinner single bump to install when I do my suspension.

Do a search. Brian Carlton did some experimenting and posted his opinion.

Speaking of Brian, does anyone know where he's hanging? He apparently stepped on some toes and is banned. Perhaps he forcefully expressed some strong opinions in OD. Send me a pm or email.

On a TD it doesn't matter much as you can just adjust the SLS.

I'm dumping the SLS, between 2 cars, there were not enough working components to make it work. On top of that were the $6,000 in receipts the PO had for the SLS system over the last 15 years to keep it going (which had failed again by the time I bought the car) I actually think it was their primary motive to sell the car.

To me it's a very cool idea, when it works, but it's just too trouble prone and messy, and expensive to keep it working.

The 13 or the 18 MM seem to be the way to? Does the extra thickness also help isolate road harshness transfer to the cabin?

I have always found road harshness to be a function of springs, shocks & bushings.

This makes a lot of sense, which brings to question, what would you replace while you've got the rear suspension torn down?

Depending on what spring solution you are going with, I would refer to the multitude of threads on conversion

Thanks winmutt, I've not seen that many conversion threads to be honest. I'm going with the springs from the SLSConversion.com guy. But, I'll be using Bilstein HD shocks instead of the ones he supplies in the kit.

Another source indicates a difference in the pads It says: " As required; Number of burls:1" or number of burls: 2, or number of burls: 3

What the heck are "burls"?
