Creative sOdd shift boot problem? (reverse light in 1st gear)

I noticed something odd today, today is the first time I drove my 240D, had my roommate video my maiden voyage, but I noticed that my reverse lights were on even though I was going forward.

I lifted the center console, I found that the rubber shift boot was getting caught in between the reverse light switch and the plate that strikes it, so any vague motion of the stick in that direction was setting off the reverse light.

For now, I'm going to drive without a boot, but I'd like to have this area dust-free. Do any of you know of a boot that won't "sink into" the console? I find it's odd that it's getting caught in there in the first place! I thought of building in a cover over the switch or something to prevent the boot from getting there, but the required motion of the stick doesn't leave much room.

The boot I have is the similar to the following:

The Shift Boot on our 80 240 didn`t sink down like yours. it stool up tall. was the original one, and had seen better days.

I looked here in pelican for Shift boots, but they don`t list the MB one. I did see a thread I started on Shift boots.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/342420-leather-shift-boot.html

I found a Leather Boot on a Saab Convertible with a 5-spd. I found a few more since. They were all on a 2 door Convertible.
I have the plastic piece around the shifter, and did a slight mod to it. cut 4 little notches, 2 on each side for the plastic ring that to boot fit too.

I did order a rubber MB Shift Boot, but it was like a piece of Tupperware when it was cold. Think it was made in India.

You know, there were 2 of these boots, brand new ones, inside the car when I bought it. Maybe the PO noticed the same problem, ordered a new boot, still had the same problem.

The only kind of boot I can think of that wouldn't interfere with that switch is the corrugated rubber kind that looks like this:
