Oh it's a stick, 5 speed. I had maxed out on pics last post but here's one inside the cab.

Well if I get this working right it might be the way to go with your Dakota and spare 617 It's pretty cool, I just want to get it running to go to freeway speeds

My truck is an auto, so I'd be pondering ways to control the auto.

I appreciate the reply, I will be following the thread. Dakotas litter junkyards so a stick swap really would not be a big deal in my truck.

I'd get rid of that K&N filter, it's about as effective as a screen door.

Agreed, that engine is going to deteriorate quickly with that junk airfilter setup. Install something with a paper filter. The air intake from an M112 gas engine (E320) would work...and should be cheap used.

Sure thing I'll remove the K&N from the PO but unfortunately I'm still worried about other problems.

So we pulled the gas tank pump and put in a new line all the way. No more restrictions, there is a small inline 8psi fuel pump that helps bring it up front.

The continued problem is crazy SMOKE... It also is a little hard to start. My mechanic things I might have a bad injector(s) causing too much fuel to go in. Here is a video of the truck running earlier today:

2001 Dakota MB Diesel 617 - Troubleshooting Smoke - YouTube

Other idea would maybe be the ALDA? There is no vac line on it to a bypass valve like on my 300TD...

Anyone have ideas? Maybe I should just run a tank of diesel through this thing see if that works...and/or just sell it.

I see the red plug in the banjo fitting port on the ALDA, probably from whoever rebuilt this IP.

Yeah I don't have a switchover port on the firewall or whatever that thing is. We were wondering if that somehow could be affecting this too.

You need to either remove the Alfa from the IP, or connect a line from the intake manifold to it...

It sounds REALLY fuel starved or out of time to me in the video, and that is not tons of smoke, just smoke as 617's go. They can get much worse!
To me (and I have had this happen) it sounds out of time either the timing chain or the start of injection. This will cause weird starting issues also, like too advanced will be ok cold but not hot. It just doesn't run very smooth. The idle seems fine, but as soon as its off idle it seems rough/hesitating

Remove the Alfa means ALDA right? How do I do that? I can just remove and cap?

Or if I run a line from back of the intake to the ALDA it goes to the red port? What does this achieve? does it open a diaphram in the ALDA to allow more fuel in? or ? That's the only way I think fuel starvation might be happening.

I've had 4 MB diesels and non of them have smoked anywhere near this guy. It's pretty insane, I was driving it down a few blocks in Minneapolis and had people yelling at me to pull over they though my car was on fire. SO there's no way it's normal levels. It probably has gotten a bit better since that point...

I was thinking rebuilt injectors might help a lot. This truck has been like opening pandora's box. I should have known.

The Alda is there to restrict fuel to injectors until boost builds... If it's not connected to intake, it never knows boost has built up...

If you remove it, it is not necessary to cap it, but some members have built caps. Removal will give the truck coal starts... Just hold the upper nut still, and rotate the lower nut clockwise like you are screwing it into the IP.

There is no upper nut. Unless you call the square ALDA body the upper nut.
