300 TDT blower motor shut-off?

Is it normal for the blower fan to always be on? The three fan buttons (low/auto/high) seem to work but with none of them depressed, the fan still runs at the auto speed. The only way to shut off the fan is to push the "off " button on the horizontal series of switches (far right). According to the manual the off button should only be actuated briefly to block odors and during a car wash-why I don't know.

This climate control seems to be very counter intuitive. Any thoughts? By the way, it is an '87 (W124). Thanks.

The high, auto, low buttons have no "off" button. You can make it seem like there is an off button by light pressing two at the same time, but the fan is not off. The only way to turn of the system is with the off possition on the climate control buttons. I rarely turn mine off and just keep the temp in a position that makes me feel comfortable. I do wish thtat the climate control had a more manual operation, but mine works well.

I believe that Mercedes designed the system with the intent that it be almost always on. This was not uncommon with cars of the late 70's and 80's era and I believe was done in part at least to help prevent the possible growth of mold due to an infrequently operated system in wet climates.

Henry is right about the buttons, and pushing the far right horizontal button turns the blower completely off. This whole climate control BS was Mercedes answer to what Americans were used to in their Lincolns and Caddies. They couldn't sell manual controls to people who were used to turning one dial and forgetting it.I prefer manual control!!! It always works. Does anyone remember the WONDER BAR radios? you always wondered if they would stop searching for a station or not.
