W115 240D sounding weird

Just did a round trip yesterday of 200 miles from Buffalo to Toronto going a steady 55-60mph. Oil pressure always pegged and engine temp very normal. Got back last night and pulled up to my building and noticed my car sounded kinda louder and a little rough, maybe like it had a new exhaust leak perhaps. I checked the fluids today; coolant level was normal with no oil in it either, the transmission fluid was perfect and rosy, BUT, the engine oil was so low it didn't even show on the dipstick, not even at the very tip. How could the oil pressure be pegged but there be so little oil that there was nothing showing at all on the dipstick, and the engine temp was fine? I hope I did not start to roast the engine or something. PS - has 139,000 miles on her now.
