tumbler locked up a while back with NO WARNING. i tried everything to get it loose... finally just drilled it out. that's a flathead screwdriver shaft and a chuck jammed in there. works like a charm, until the aforementioned problem yesterday.

FYI for the future, if it locks up and you can't get it free just order a new tumbler from the dealer. It will come with a new key and the brand new key will usually be able to turn the tumbler another couple times since it isn't worn out from 30 years of use. On both of my cars the tumbler needed to be replaced. The 85 gave warning, the 84 gave warning 2 turns before it locked up. I removed both of them at the first indication of trouble. The new ones screwed right into place. In the time between removal and replacement I was careful about where I parked.

Looks like your drill chuck kissed the dash a little, eh?

More likely that is wear from a key fob and other keys .... the weight of which is what wore out that tumbler in the first place....

Kudos to the wise person who suggested to me many years ago:
Keep your keys in a fob that allows the ignition key to be removed and placed into the ignition by itself with nothing else attached. Check. Wisdom offered, received, and acceded to.

Some manufacturers put out warnings way back .... I think I saw it on PBS Autoweek... Goss warning about how little weight.... multiplied over thousands of hours... can wear it out...
