124 Power Steering Pump in 210?

Has anyone tried putting a 124 power steering pump in a 210? The pump on my '96 E300D (W210, OM606NA) has been weak, especially at parking lot speeds when you really would like to have it. Several fluid flushes have helped but not cured the problem. This is the new-type pump with a square plastic reservoir, no replaceable filter, and no rebuild kit. Factory-rebuilt pumps are available (in fact, that's all you can buy these days) but expensive.

I have a couple of spare 124 pumps with round metal reservoirs, replaceable filters, and available rebuild (seal) kits. Looking at my 1995 E300 (W124, OM606NA) and 1996 E300 side-by-side, I think a 124-type pump would fit and work in the 210. Just wondered if there is some invisible difference, perhaps due to the change in steering from recirculating ball to rack and pinion.

Jeremy

Pressure would be my only concern, don't want to blow out a seal.

Good question. The W124 pump is 110 bar; the 210 pump is 115 bar. Both are LuK/Vickers. I suspect that small difference won't matter.

At the moment, the 124 pump is physically mounted in the 210 and I am deciding which pulley to use. The original 210 pump's pulley sticks out too far so I have a choice between a 124 Diesel pulley (too big) and a pulley from a gas-engined car I stripped some years ago, which is slightly too small. I suspect I'll use the small pulley as long as the serpentine belt tensioner has enough range to take up the slack.

Oops! The pump fits just fine but the 210 high-pressure hose has a different fitting and won't screw into the 124 pump. I'll have to get a new 210 high-pressure hose (which might be 210-320-36-72) and have a shop put the correct end for the 124 pump on it.

Well that's good to know - I've seen many a W210 power steering pump sold as "also good for W124" - Mercedes and those bloody fittings again...

How difficult would it be to fabricate an adapter fitting?

Good question. I'd have to ask a shop and I bet they'd want both fittings in hand before they'd commit to anything. Would probably be less expensive than an entire new hose though. I can get an end and some hose off of a couple of junkyard cars and see what they might do. Thanks, Sixto!

Even in 124 models, the fittings are varying. I often hat to change the hoses, too.

Good point. Jeremy, maybe a V8 124 high pressure hose will have the right fittings and shape if you want to try a later pump in the '95. Doesn't address the current situation, though.
