A Few E320 CDI EGR Questions
As I understand it, the EGR valve going bad on a CDI is not uncommon. Made me think of a few questions as I plan my car's future.
1. Around what mileage have CDI owners seen the EGR go bad? 2. Would higher cetane diesel (via an additive) tend to prolong EGR life? 3. Is cleaning the EGR an effective solution if a code is thrown? 4. Am I correct in assuming that, if one were to delete EGR at the ECU for offroad testing purposes, that no EGR related codes could ever be thrown? 5. If an EGR code were thrown, would deleting EGR at the ECU remove the code?

shertex, PM, GregMN or babymog when it comes to this car throwing codes for EGR tinkering. One of them - can't recall - has experience with this stuff.

Someone over on Benzworld said that the EGR problems tended to be in 05....which would be nice.

Maybe MB used VW's EGR control logic in '06

The codes are usually because it's dirty. Remove it, clean it, and reinstall.
Higher cetane fuel will help because it ignites more readily. W211s aren't really that good at offroading. That's a bad idea.

Since it's an 06, has used a cetane booster for most of its life, and has been driven mostly highway miles, perhaps I have nothing to be concerned about. Just noticed you can get a reman from the dealer for $288....which isn't terrible.

My car threw an EGR code. Pulled the valve, two bolts, out in under a minute. Old toothbrush and some brake cleaner. Got it looking new in 5 minutes. Reinstall. Started back up, no code, no low boost.
Clean it before you replace it. Earlier CDIs had a different EGR that they later updated.

Mine was loaded with soot at about 100k and was misbehaving but with no codes on dash (MB tech said one was stored and visible with STAR system). Easy to remove and clean. Plan to remove plastic cover on EGR every other oil change to check.
Do not know if cetane boost will help but suspect slow and city driving to contribute to soot loading. X2....Easy fix....first try cleaning.

Enthusiasts-my egr went bad on my first long trip at about 30,000. It would go into a limp home mode. 3 dealers because no one wanted to fix it under warranty. Finally they fixed it with a new egr valve (improved) and i've had no problems since. Cleaned it twice but it was pretty clean. I now have 248,500 mi and it's been good since. steve
