First I would like to say that I was able to fix all of my vacuum door lock troubles with the help of the members on this site. This type of forum is invaluable !
My question is regarding the shifting habits of my transmission. I just recently acquired a 1980 300D, and when I drive on level ground, here is what is does: 1st gear seems normal, and then shifts to 3rd, then downshifts to 2nd. It only does this sometimes. Other times it seems to rev higher when shifting to 3rd. Once is in third, it goes on forever. The shifting also is hard, especially compared to my Chevy. When I have the car on the highway, it just loves to be driven, it just doesn’t seem to like the stop & go driving. I am trying to get the hang of the car, I am just wondering if I should take the car to a shop for an adjustment. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Robert |

These cars shift a lot harder than most cars, especially compared to newer cars. Don't know why that is, obviously it's how it worked out with the designs. But, I don't doubt that you are having trouble with yours and that your shifts are unusually rough. One thing I find 'fun' with how mine shifts is when attempting a peel out on a turn with all 77 horses it squeals the tires on the upshift and the car pulls forward. Very cool sensation.
Hopefully someone on here can be of more help than I was with your tranny problem, I hope you can get it worked out. Good luck.

Is the fluid full? Sounds like something the tranny would do if there isn't enough fluid in there pushing things around correctly.
These things are supposed to shift hard, not neck-jarring hard, but it isn't no Chevy when it comes to shifting. |

Make sure you check the fluid level with a HOT transmission. These cars are sensitive to trans fluid levels. Put in a new trans kit and switch to Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluid and you will be pleased at the result.

I checked the fluid HOT, and added about 3/4 of a quart.
That made all the difference. Next week I will get the trans filter kit from Fast Lane, and change to the Mobile 1. Thanks ! Robert |
