Bay Area PnP question

How does the PickNPull work? No one answers at either the Newark or Fairfield PnP's. Can you pull a truck right up next to the vehicle your picking from? Do I need to bring a cart or something to haul my tools and swag? Do they provide carts??

Any enlightenment appreciated - I'd like to be prepared.

thnx,
Bill

You are unable to pull a truck up next to the car you are pulling from. They do have carts/market baskets.

Depending on the site, some have lots of carts, some have few. I've had to stand around waiting for someone to check out so I can have his cart. Others simply bring their own cart.

If you were trying to call them on the phone, good luck.

I bring my own Wheel Barrow from home, throw in my tool bags, Then there is no waiting for one of theirs.
They don`t always let the carts or wheel barrows out in the parking lots, so packing your tools to the front door can be an effort if you pack a lot of them.

Packing your treasures back to your PU, if you have seats, doors or ??? makes it handy using your own set of wheels.

You pay your $2, sign in and go find what ever vehicle you are looking for.

They will give you a list of all MB`s, on which rows etc...

If you go to the Newark yard, pack your lunch and take water, it is a 2 day hike out to where the MB`s are....LOL

Jacks are not allowed, but I have 2 hidden that yard.

Take all your tools with you, do not leave any in sight in your vehicle, or they will not be there when you return.

Sign up for the Tool Kit rewards cars, you will gain points on the $ you spend. After so many $ spent, they sent you a $20 coupon.
With the cards, they will notify you on up coming sales, and you get in a couple days before the sale starts for the commoners.

You cannot drive your vehicle into the yards.

Closest to the Bay I have been is the Fairfield PnP, but probably all the same. Their carts are quite rugged, built around temp spare wheels, and could easily move a transmission. To pull engines, they have portable chain hoists (never used). Looks like people put engines & such on a metal skid at the end of the row and the workers later move it up front.

Check on-line first so fewer wild goose chases. Their row52 link has photos, date it entered yard, row#. Fairfield had a mythical 300D since that whole row was bare. I usually only go on 1/2 off days (club card), otherwise prices are often better on ebay and my butt stays comfortably at home.

something wheeled is great. you may be comfortable hauling your toolbox but try the toolbox plus any parts you pull. definitely bring water. i also like to have a lot of plastic bags and a pen.

I agree, sandwich and freezer bags are great to put in small parts and felt tip pen to mark what they are.

PNP has the "A" Frames on wheels with the Chain Fall to pull and engine.
The workers do not take your engine down to the office building where you pay.
YOU Push the "A" Frame with the engine dangling on the chain, and try to keep all 4 wheels going in the same direction.
Some times you can get some one to help push it out to the road from between the rows of cars.
Hard to push them in the deep gravel.

A good tip on pulling the engine. If you don`t have an engine Tilter. pull out the rear Seat belts to the end, cut them off and unbolt the end from the floor.
Use the metal end to bolt to the engine and tie the loose end to the Chain Fall Hook.
This works best when just lifting out an engine.

Taking the eng and trans together, bring an engine tilter.

Bring a 14V drill motor battery with some jumper wires. Work great to move seats, roll a window up/down.
And to check a Blower motor.

In the SJ yards, they some times only keep the cars 14 days and out they go.
Here in Carson City, Nv. I have seen MB`s 6 months.

You can check online to see what cars are there, but will not tell if the part you want is there. other people
are also pulling and breaking parts.

PNP is a great peace to learn how things come apart, so when you work on your car you know how it all comes apart.
I refer to PNP as PNP U (University)

I have worked all day on some cars, pulled the dash, CC unit out of a 240 and chased all the wires to see where they go.
The 82/83 240`s have the EGR control box behind the pass kick panel. chased the colored wires into the fuse panel,
through the FW to the front of the engine on both sides.

And take pictures.

Success

Thank you all - your posts made the trip easier. The trip was pretty much a success, I wasn't after anything big but I did get two of the three door panels I needed with the correct color and trim in pretty pristine shape and a few interior trim pieces (my dog wanted out of the car REAL bad!).

I also grabbed a few other things since the opportunity was there.
CA pump, closing assist pneumatic elements for doors and trunk lid, pneumatic element for the trunk lid handle, right outside mirror.

I didn't see any carts at the Newark PnP (180 miles from home) but then I didn't ask. As BillGrissom pointed out the Fairfield (another 70 miles) has pretty heavy duty carts with a good coating of dirty oil on them and standing in the bottom.

My First trip Ever to a pull parts from car - Thanks again, the help was awesome.

PnP is a good place to practice releasing W140 front door seat switch panels without tearing or dirtying the door card upholstery.

Jeremy and I were at a PnP a few weeks ago and found what looked to be an intact windshield washer level indicator. IIRC they're NLA so it yours breaks the dealer has you go without. The front end was hit so there was no taking the level indicator without reshaping the front end.

Forgot to mention, I always take newspaper to cover the cart bottom. Also, many zip-lock bags and pads to note car model & year. I haul bigger tools in plastic buckets. Be assured that the tool you don't bring is the one you will need. To crawl under, throw a trunk liner on the gravel, as everyone else does. But shake the car hard first, and cuss at any gomer who gets inside the car while you are underneath. I think if you read the fine print, it says, "car falls on you, you weren't supposed to crawl under".

I'll have to agree, it was a great place to take things apart and see how it really goes together.

Keep an eye on your tools. The people hanging around the yards are not the most trustworthy individuals.

Amazing how many people come to PNP w/o any tools, and want to borrow yours.

And when you leave the car you were working on, double check to see if you picked up all your tools.
I have absent mindedly left tools in the past. And have found tools from others now and then.
usually not the best quality though.
