Confirming clutch/fan compatability

First, I did a lot of searching but the threads seems to get so many things going on that I was not quite sure.

I have a 87 300D W124.

I need to replace the fan clutch. Will the 606-200-01-22 ACM clutch fit on the original metal fan? I think yes, but am not certain.

If I need a new fan, does the 606-200-01-23 fan fit in the existing fan shroud. Also any comments on the Trucktec fans?

Will I need mew bolts to attach the clutch to the fan or are the old ones reuseable?

Thanks.

G

Im just responding so it gets bumped up. I know that someone is familiar with this... there just moving on from these older cars onto something newer.

There is an upgrade for the om603 engines to use the om606 fan and clutch. If no one responds, I can get you a measurement from the om606m fan and clutch.

but why not just be safe and buy both together? surely 30 years of spinning and trying to fly apart will have an effect on a plastic disk. right?

I have put the 11 blade fan and fan clutch for a 606 turbo onto my '92 300D and it works great. I bought the fan clutch and fan blades from Pelican Parts. The Trucktec fan seems to be pretty good quality. No problems yet.

Are you seeing any cooling improvements over the stock metal fan / fan clutch.

How about noise reduction...any?

I've thought I'd like to do this to my SDL 603.961....especially now that the southwest desert is heating up for the season.

Can't answer to this since I helped bring the car back from a wreck and that was one of the things that had to get replaced.

I just did this a month ago in my 87 300d and everything fit just fine, no issues. I did keep the old fan clutch and fan in the trunk just in case. The car definitely runs cooler, but I can't tell if it is from the 11blade fan or just a properly working clutch

How about the famous fan "Roar"?

I'd like to quiet the stock fan roar sound a bit. Is the 11 blade quieter than the stock steel fan?

Thanks!

The quietest fan is an electric fan which only spins when its needed.

Thanks tjts1 but I'm wondering about the mechanical type.

I don't really know...the fan clutch on my metal fan was pretty much dead so I didn't notice a roar. When I installed the new one I definitely heard the roar, which told me my old fan clutch was dead

To the OP, the answer is no.

The clutch and fan are designed for the same max. speed, the clutch limits the maximum speed of the fan so that it doesn't do a BMW into the hood. Use a 606 fan and clutch together, a 603 fan and clutch together.

thanks for the replies. I will hopefully get the parts in tomorrow and swap them out this week. I will post back on the cooling effect. My clutch now is definitely shot.

Ok, I installed these parts this weekend. Everything went in just how it should and fit perfectly. If any one was wondering I did not buy any tools. I drilled a hole in the end of a steel bar for the 8mm hex key and used a hose clamp to secure it and I used vise grips with leather to grab and secure the water pump pulley. it really when quickly (~1hr), although i didn't have to break the bolt initially because it was already loose I guess the old clutch may have been good just loose? I replaced it any way. After replacement i drove it around for about 30-45 min with AC on max and trying to drive it pretty hard. Its hard to tell but it does seem to have more fan noise particularly when the engine is revved up higher. I was not able to get the temp to go over 100ºF (it was 98ºF here today) even in traffic when it would do that before and I would have to hit the heat. Hopefully all is well.

Now on to the AC pressure switch and dryer replacement.

Thanks,

G

sounds like that fan is working a little TOO well.. . .

the numbers on your temp gauge might mean something else, how did you measure this?
