swappable oil coolers? w123
so i have an '82 240d and i noticed that there is a very small couple of oil drops under the oil cooler every morning (under the car). I pulled an oil cooler from a junk yard a couple of months ago but it is the black oil cooler with the hose inlets on the top and bottom and my oil cooler is silver with both inlets on the bottom. Can i interchange these oil coolers or is one specific to each w123 model?

theres a large/long one for 300d/dt and a tiny one for 240d. i dont think the larger one will bolt to a 240d radiator but i have never tried?

not only are the hoses different, the coolers are not the same width. i guess you pulled it from a 300D.

You'd have a very hard if not impossible time trying to get the hoses to hook on - either get the hoses as well and upgrade to the bigger cooler (dunno if it'd mount to the radiator the same) or look for a cooler the same you have.

that makes sense. Probably got it off a 300. I will search for a 240d cooler. It's nothing catastrophic... it's just a couple of drops in the morning... but better to get it fixed now instead of later... I replaced the oil cooler lines ~1 yr ago... so far those have held up well.

Yup, pays to - I hate to think how many engines have met a premature death due to oil cooler + hose related leaks. I've got one of my coolers at an engineering place now getting a hose fitting replaced actually...

My 80 240 has this type also. Just don`t see these much in the yards. Mine weeps at one of the fittings, not the hose. Dang thing looks too fragile to mess with. Charlie

Thats it
My '82 240d has the exact setup as your's Charlie, that has to be what he has. Hard to find hoses anymore.. The fittings at the bottom are some alloy-tougher than aluminum- I just replaced my hoses and had to get back in and re-tighten the fittings you have in your pic 😡

I'll have to look and see if I have one of them.

And make up some hoses if these are not available. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/354554-converting-oil-cooler-lines-stainless-braided-hose.html I haven`t taken mine out and messed with it....yet. Might not be able to modify our type of Coolers. Charlie

Yes.. That is the cooler i have. I have never seen one in the yard. The hoses are not leaking it looks like it is dripping out where the nut meets the small hook shaped hardline. i can see a little oil there.. beyond that it seems ok. But will still be on the hunt. The hoses are in very good condition. |
