w115 240d heater core access
Hello I am looking for a guide to accessing the heater core on a w115 240d. I know it is said that the dash must be removed, but I swear I have seen a write up where the core was accessed by removing the floor vents, removing the center counsel but not the dash. If anyone has any info on accessing the 240d heater core I would gladly appreciate it. I am finding coolant in the backseat under the floor mats. It appears to be clear antifreeze. I would like to attempt to seal the heater core if possible. If I cannot find any leaks up to the firewall then my problem is probably my heater core? or perhaps the seal on top of the heater core where the coolant flows in and out? If anyone can offer any advice that would be great! Thanks
-Remove grille in front of windshield, and disconnect electric connector -Drain fluids and disconnect all 3 hoses -Remove centre console and both front carpets. -Loosen both rear-heating ducts, unclip bottom half of blower cabinet. -Disconnect the control-rods to the housing, and the side-ducts from the housing. -Remove the centre duct screws and disconnect the internal rod. -Remove the complete housing .. -There you have the fan. I believe this will get me close to where I need to be. Also the blower fan is weak. Works only sometimes. So I would like to replace this if possible. I would appreciate advice rather than be told "Don't Bother". Thanks for your time! What do we have here? So am i side tracked into and confused into thinking that the heater core, and fan on the core is accessed this way? But in reality there is another blower fan in the dash? http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes/332498-w115-heater-fan-motor-questions.html This refers to the pdf I am looking for if a member has it that would be great. "blower-install.pdf" is what I am looking for. Maybe this should have been posted in the vintage forum to begin with. Maybe a mod can move it there? thanks Last edited by BobbyNoodles; 08-20-2016 at 07:59 PM. |

Dash doesn't need to be pulled. There are a couple of write-ups here on this forum, just need to do a search for them. It's easiest if you pull the seats for access.
Not really difficult, just time consuming. While you have it apart is a good time to renew the various seals involved. If the core is rotted completely away and can't be repaired I have a good used one you can have for $20 + shipping. There are separate fans for the defrost/heat side of the system and the A/C. The A/C fan is in the very front of the console and is a "squirrel cage" affair. The defrost is a conventional fan which is mounted on the firewall and yes, it is pretty weak.. You've pretty much got it figured out it appears. The evaporator is mounted in the center box of the console. The A/C box does NOT and I repeat ,does NOT need to be split!

Oh yeah, the listed brushes are for the A/C blower and not the defrost fan.

Bobby-
I just want to be sure you are solving the right problem. You said you are finding "clear antifreeze" in the back seat carpets. Could it just be water? My rear window seal leaks and I get water where the back seat carpets lay. I am no expert, but the method you describe (I think) will be stymied by a rain shield over the fan. I think that is why exterior access to the fan is so difficult. The normal procedure involves removing the center console (I think). I will poke around to see if I can find any detailed procedures, and post again later.

MANUAL FOUND
Ok great thanks for the tips.
I am sure it is antifreeze pooling in the back and not water. What I meant is that the antifreeze is not dirty or discolored. Just green antifreeze (which is not proper coolant I suspect) I believe I have located the write up I was looking for. Not sure where this should go but it may be useful for other members and maybe should be cataloged somewhere. TinyUpload.com - best file hosting solution, with no limits, totaly free blower install pdf This is what I was looking for. Now just to get in there...... |
