722.4 Spring Related to Governor Gear Failure

In another thread, I describe the problem I had with my 722.4 (all of the sudden only first gear but reverse was fine). As many suspected, the problem was a broken helical governor gear. However, my mechanic has discovered an additional complication. There is a stray spring, perhaps about 1" long. As best he can tell, this spring jammed the gears of the secondary pump, which in turn caused the governor gear failure (from his reading, a common cause of this failure).

The spring apparently was connected to some puck-like piece which serves a check valve of sorts. Does anyone know where this spring came from and how important it is to go back in place?

I will post some pics of the mangled spring in the pump gears when I get a chance.

There were some posts that the rear pump as no longer used post 86 or so and that it can be safely removed. ( I don't have specifics as to the mods needed for removal. )

From what I recall, the rear pump gears engage when stopped and disengage over a pretty low road speed so this spring might be part of the system.

As I look at various schematics, it seems as if there are a number of springs in the 722.4. Is there any way to figure out which one it might be other than looking at all the spring locations until we find one that's missing?
