240D Injection pump interchangeability question

I need a injection pump for a 1980 240D OM616. Car-part is listing an options of before or after engine serial # 121329 YET there are cars from 1976-1983 that turn up no matter which option is chosen.

Do all U.S. spec 240D's injection pumps interchange? (I am expecting them to, but would rather not find out the hard way that the answer is "NO")

Opinin; I would say no because as time passed the 240D engine had changes made to it and resulting in it geting slightly more powerful as time passed.

I would think that from 1980 forward you would be OK.

I think it was 81 240D that the engine was increased in HP (72?) and they went to the Pencil Glow Plugs.
The Pre Chambers have the rounded ends.

77 - 79 was the lower HP (67?) and the larger loop style GP`s.
The PC`s have the angled ends.

The dividing line on the Injection Pumps would be here also.

I'll admit up front that I have pretty much zero knowledge about what I'm writing, but just going on my 617 experience, knowing that the engines are pretty similar other than 1 cylinder.

I'm guessing that the earlier pumps are "M" pumps and the later ones are probably "MW"s. There are differences but Dieselmeken prefers to build high performance pumps from the "M" pumps because most of the adjustments are external. If your pump has an external ALDA it'll be an "M". At least on the 617, the quick and dirty way to tell them apart (they really look quite a bit different once you've seen both) is that the shut-off diaphragm is right up on the top rear of the "M" and is hidden down low on the rear of the "MW" and is hard to see at all.

Again, on the 617 they can be swapped for each other and in fact my '85 engine now sports an "M" based SuperPump. The lines all must be bent a bit and the shutoff line has to be moved as noted but basically everything will bolt up. If, however, you want a bolt-in this may not be exactly the way to go.

No clue if this is helpful but it's what I have to offer.

Dan

Just fit any pump that isn't a pneumatic governed one. Even if your old one was, it's an upgrade...

Mmmm... Pretty sure this motor..oh wait. I will check to see what the GPs are. My only choices are pencil or loop glow plugs, right?

The 616 in the car has pencil GP's. As I pulled and tested, and reamed the GP hole last fall. Had one pre-chamber out, but did not know enough about it to tell if it was rounded or not. What is the other style of Pre-chamber?(The 1980 300TD-NA has what I would call rounded end Pre-chambers)

Guess I am leaning towards a post 1980 IP, and if it delivers more fuel, I will enjoy the extra 5 HP.

Thanks for the replies. With some luck I will have a good running 616 for less than $100.

The additional horsepower was not enabled by any substantial changes in the injection pump I believe. There may or may not be any real difference there.

You are probably correct on that.
I posted in post#3 the changes in the engine and HP, and could have been a change in the pump, IDK for sure.
May be the same pump and the HP change is with in the engine upgrades.

Actually I have a general knowlege on fuel injection systems in general and some specific ones from 1975 up till 1980.

However, spcific knowlege is lacking. In 1980 any fuel Injection issues for 1980 and beyond cars would have been under warranty and the shop I worked in would not have seen them.

Blue85" has never said what type of Fuel Injection Pump he needs to replace?
I am now thining that the MW needs the Oil Supply Line to lube it. I don't know if the M type Fuel Injection Pump on the 240Ds has the Oil Supply Line.

Search ebay "MERCEDES W123 Injection Pump for OM616 .912 200D 240D 1976-1985" seller from lithuania. Claims 1976-85 and gives a bunch of interchange numbers in his ad.
It looks like it is an M type pump.

See the pic. Does your Fuel Injection Pump look like the one in the pic. Notice the Nut curcled in yellow and the yellow arrow pointing to the Hex on the Delivery Valve Holder. If it looks like that you have an MW type fuel Injection pump.

Concerning the Glow Plugs did you use a 12mm Wrench or socket to remove them or did you need a 13/16" wrench or socket to remove them?

Yes, they are. All w123 240 D's have MW pump.
