Replacing trailing arm 126 in Denver--good price

Just a heads up that Elroy's Alignment in Lakewood replaced the trailing arm on my daughters 84 SD for $175 labor. I thought that was a very reasonable price if anyone else needs that work. I provided him with a used arm. I haven't crawled under and checked the work yet but I did drive it home successfully. I've used that shop for suspension work for over 30 years.

I think I figured out why the old one rusted out. The spring seat had caused a hole in the arm so water could get inside the arm and cause the rust.

I tried editing the thread title from trailer to trailing but without success. Can someone else do that?

Those thin metal formed arms are a work of art!

That does sound like a fair price on the labor.

Yep that spring seat is the typical area for rust to start on those r107, w114, w115, w116, w123 and w126 rear control arms. I like to Por 15 the bare metal area the spring causes if I have the spring out to prevent that type of damage.

They are a work of art although I understand why MB decided to move to a cast aluminum trailer arm on the later 126 because that thin metal can't take the working of the spring over the life of the rest of the components on the car. If I had been doing the replacement job myself and seen the hole worn thru the old arm, I would have installed a heavy piece of rubber in the new arm prior to putting the spring back in.

I wonder if this could have been caused by the spring not seated properly. The depression where the end of the spring should sit look unmarked.

A bit of additional info. I was looking thru some paperwork yesterday and found a receipt where the PO had replaced this same trailing arm in 2016 and 29k miles ago. A broken spring was replaced at the same time. Both spring and trailing arm installed were used. So that used arm didn't last all that long, especially since I live in a pretty dry climate.
