I need to fuse my aux water pump

After reading about cphilip's fire I think we all need to carry a fire extinguisher and fuse the aux water pump. Does anyone know which wire and what size fuse? Info will be greatly appreciated.

Test your pump before fusing it. The one in my car and the one I pulled from the junkyard were dead. A heater hose makes a good pump replacement

Unplug it. I haven't noticed any difference in performance after unplugging mine.

I just put a working aux water pump in my 84. After driving part of the winter without it I notice a vast difference in heating performance. I have a thermometer in my vent. Before I had the water pump in there it would rarely get over 80F at the vent and it would take a good 10+ mins at freeway speeds to get there. Now, as soon as my engine is above 40C it starts blowing warm air at 60F+ and by the time the engine is up to temp it is blowing 90-100F air.

One thing I did differently though is I wired the aux pump independant of the CCU system. I turn it on as soon as I get in the car and let it run. I have it fused and relayed from the battery. My motivation for this was to help with circulation for my Webasto. Note- All of the above observations are from cold starts with out the Webasto on.

So in my opinion, the aux pump does play a large role in heating the interior of the vehicle.

Its an automatic diesel-burning mini-boiler for the coolant. It heats and circulates the coolant to take the place of a block heater. Advantage is that it works anywhere and provides more heat.

It is a coolant heater independant of the car's engine. Mo knows all about mine as he installed it! Come to think of it I also got my aux pump from him!

Mo, I like the new pic of your wagon! I'll have to take a pic of mine in the snow one of these days.

In my observations the aux pump would run both directions. If you ground the brown wire it circulates one way. If you ground the black wire it runs the other way. If you plug it into the existing connector you don't have to worry about it as it has a tab that only allows it to be plugged the correct way. But since I bypassed mine I experimented with it.

Very odd since Mercedes uses the brown colored wires for almost all their grounds.....

If I made a mistake and put the fuse on the wrong wire will it still worK?

Most often there is only a (+) going to things so there is no choice as to which wire to put the fuse on.

For my own piece of mind I will check it again when I have some spare time.
But I cliped one lead of my Ohm Meter to the Black Wire with Red Dots Socket on the Connector a when I touched the probe to the Valve cover that is the one that had continuity.

Do they make 1 amp 2 prong blade type fuses? I have never noticed.

I just got back from re-checking the wires again and I put the fuse on the wrong (-) color Brown Ground wire.
I indeed could only get (+) voltage frorm the Black Red Dotted wire
Thanks for correcting me on this.

I installed a 2 Amp fuse as the motor draws only about 1 Amp.

I used a 1 Amp fuse on the positive line to the pump...it hasn't blown yet. However, I DID have the fuse on it with my OLD pump failed. I knew it blew because one morning I was starting the car and didn't hear the normal "hum" of the pump.....checked the fuse, sure enough it was blown. Replaced pump with a spare and put in a new fuse, its been fine ever since. I'm glad I fused it!

Do a search under my username. I posted the procedure and NAPA part numbers a while back.
