What is your worst experience selling a MB diesel, heres mine.

Heres a real winner ,I set out to sell a car on CL ,car runs and drives but will only shift no higher than 2nd gear. Its in descent shape and the buyer was aware after seeing the car of its problems and condition. He tells me he will buy it but wants x,y,and z done . I said as long as you buy it I will agree to install x,y and z.I do explain Im in the process of moving and need till the weekend for completion.Long story short ,weekend arrives and 2 things he expresses wont work .Me keeping the plates ,me needing to pay for his tow because Im keeping the plates.Text ,text, text ,later I get fed-up with the guy about mid weekend after he tells me I didnt tell him the car will only go 25mph .I look for a way of getting his $200.deposit and decide to pawn a valued piece of jewlery since money is tight.I grab my phone and look that he was calling and left an angry message about him being a Free Mason and I will regret my deeds . What a piece of work this guy is ,I really needed this money because of family issues and also having to move but not nearly bad enough to deal with someone who calls you out as dishonest .I told him to meet me in a public place and I WILL return his money .I spent the evening with family and proceeded afterwords to the time and place set, after handing him the cash across the table I told him to loss my number . Watch out for this kind of buyer ,the ones having you jump through their personal hoops and telling you the whole time how honest they are about business transactions.

You take the money and he takes the car. No x,y and z. You are asking for trouble with buyer like that. If you hold the car, sign a non refundable deposit receipt. If one does not turn up to get the car, advertise again and forfeit the deposit. Simple.

He wanted to buy some parts off of a parts car that I had pulled also ,this is after his message he had sent ,I had even pulled these during this extremely busy week . He forgot that I still had these parts and tried to deactivate the message he sent about being dishonest , I declined the offer .What nerve ,he must play people all the time with this BS honesty card he plays ,what a sad individual.

Why would you agree to a conditional sale like this on a car that's hardly worth the air it's displacing?

I looked at your post again. Here is what I would have done differently.

If I was unable to get the car ready as promised i would have called him and said I need a few more days to make the repairs. I'd not have agreed to pay a tow for him. If that was insufficient to satisfy him I might at that time have agreed to refund half the money but probably not all.

Nobody is perfect, not even a dealer.

In a situation like this requesting a few more days is not unreasonable.

I like to have people who buy a car from me to feel that I have given them a fair assesment of the car and its attributes .Ive done this long enough to have previous buyers call up seeing my add to chat about the MB diesel I sold them 5 yrs ago. This one kind of sunk the ship ,so to speak.Since the move and my parents being Ill ,I might have to say so long to the whole MB hobbie for good.I currently have found new digs up by a local lake where the air is fresh and the hustle and bustle of city life is much more slowed down . Ill keep 2 cars as commuters but my days are done as far as buying and flipping these great cars.

Give it some time. If you have done this for five years, you must be pretty good at it and it must be some fun. You can always slow down and concentrate on just the best ones, the ones which need less R&M to get them ready to flip.

And we all care enough to keep these great cars on the road as long as possible.

I see a few problems.

If your first post is anything like the communication you had with the buyer, it leaves lots of room for miscommunication . ( as in all run together and difficult to read. )

E mail is difficult enough to get communication right, text is much worse it seems due to limited space. Besides, if someone has a phone number, call them by voice that way misunderstandings don't take on a life of their own.

Spending the deposit isn't the fault of the buyer.

Unless there was a written agreement ( on actual paper ) as to what is going to transpire, the deal is unclear and each party will have different expectations.

And, it seems that older formerly high end cars bring out odd buyers.

I followed you all the way to where you mentioned having to pawn jewelry to refund his deposit. A deposit is to hold until the transaction is completed, not for you to have already spent. Put yourself in his shoes and wonder how you might reply if concerned you will ever see your deposit again. I also wonder how clearly you expressed the transmission issues and wanting to keep the license plates, since your 1st post is not very grammatical, with clear sentence structure.

My belief is when you are selling something have the condition of the vehicle and the terms in writing then there is no "he said she said" about the deal. Before the buyer signs besure it has the buyer test driveing the Car or if the buyer did not test drive show that you offered that.

The other part of selling which in your perticular case is might not have been possible is to avoiding having to sell in a short period of time. Try not to be a "Motivated Seller" that the buyer can minipulate and take advantage of.

I used to work as a security guard. All of the Public is well, special. Be glad the guy you were dealing with was sober when you were face to face.
