1986 300D 5speed turbo

Hi everyone,
I have not been here for years as my 300D left me and took my wife with her.
I have just picked up an 86 with a 603.912 with an rb20 and a 5 speed from a 190e.

It has no tachometer if anyone can direct me.
It has the cruise stalk but no cruise, from reading in think there should be a controller under the dash. I have seen a plug on the inside fender that might be for it. Has anyone got experience with OEM cruise?
The box has a thrust bearing like sound with the clutch out.
I live in a hot climate and thinking of putting 30SAE in the box, what does everyone think?
(Yes I know the obvious of pulling it)

Thanks in advance
Howie

Welcome back!

Sometimes new oil in the box helps. I'd probably start with whatever was originally called for and if its not acting perfectly go a little thicker.

Not sure of your questions

Are you looking for a part number for a diesel tachometer?

For clarity - are you saying clutch pedal up - shifter in neutral - bearing noise? If so that's probably it. Worn bearings. You might get a slight reduction in noise with fresh ATF (yep - read MM / FSM / Owner's manual) - avoid using anything other than what MB says to put in the gearbox - more often than not they don't shift well with other options.

(I can't help with cruise control other than to say there's a good functional description in the FSM)

Hmmm how to add pictures?

Tacho,
Do I gave a sensor and amplifier? If I do where will I find it?

Yeah I was a bit concerned about a heavier weight oil in the box.
According to the seller it made no noise in the 190e but made noise as soon as it was installed. I do think it’s bearing noise. If I pull the box I think I would go back to an auto. I would like to consider this later nd get some use from this box. I assume it would get noisyer before it goes bang.

Cruise control FSM? sorry have not been here for a long time and am a bit lost.

I can’t seem to add pictures, it asks for a URL.
I can’t edit my signature it says the code is too long even if I don’t edit and say save.

Does the IP have a VCV or provision for a VCV if you go automatic?

There's a tachometer sensor on the front pulley - I'm not sure about the existence of a separate amplifier for this generation of vehicle (my petrol W201 doesn't have one - but that doesn't necessarily mean...)

I am guessing he means he is using the turbo from an RB20, which also uses a T3 flange type and would probably work pretty well in this application.
