1982 240d manual tranny flange
My 240d started making a thump, thump, thump sound when I would accelerate from a stop. It turned out to be a completely trashed driveshaft support bushing so I replaced it today.
I removed the bolts from the front and rear flex disc along with the driveshaft support bushing/bearings. I was able to slide the entire shaft out towards the rear. I didn't have the 41mm and the 46mm wrenches but the collar nut easily came off using a large adjustable wrench and a pipe wrench. It wasn't torqued that high. My transmission flex disk was cracked and the flange on the manual tranny was beat up. One of the bolt holes was completely worn through on the side. The center of the bolt on that hole looked to be a little thicker than a needle. I should have replaced this 1 or 2 years ago but I rarely get under the car to inspect the flex discs. Does anyone have a part number to the flange that goes on a manual tranny and connects the driveshaft? Do all w123's use the same flange? I did notice a different part number for the flex disc between the 300d and my 240d so maybe the flange is different. I did re-install the driveshaft with a new flex disc without replacing the damaged flange. I'll replace the flange in the Spring when it's not freezing outside. I drove the car forward and reverse for a few hundred yards and then tighted the collar nut with a small pipe wrench. The car seems to be driving great. No more thumping sounds. I've attached some pics of the job. Hope these pics and post help some people. pete |

Manual or automatic trans? I know the 240 and 300 manual trans flanges are (at least dimensionally) the same although I can't be sure about balance or if there's a difference between the M-B cast iron case and the Getrag aluminum case. Don't know nothin' about the autos.

I wouldn't expect the system to last for long with only two bolts holding the flange in place. Expect some more damage to occur. My choice would have been to wait for a replacement part.

I have 3 bolts in and it's seems to be driving perfectly. The hole was about 60% complete.
I'll check it in the spring or the next time I'm under the car. I plan on replacing it before the summer. I think the reason the flange was damaged was because the driveshaft support was completely worn out and was bouncing up and down. I've replaced the support along with the bearing so the stress on the flange and the holes should be much less. It might hold up fine but I will replace it when the weather warms up. |
