W211: What's the connection between speed sensor and power steering?
Happily driving along in my 06 CDI when, all of the sudden I got error messages for brakes, ABS, and ESP and I lost power steering. Pulled the codes and the culprit is a bad right rear speed sensor. That code appeared in both the SBC and ESP systems. What I'm confused by is why a failed speed sensor would affect power steering.
Thoughts?

The power steering has a proportional valve that gets a signal from the computer. It's used to tighten up the steering at speed and loosen it up for parking.
If the computer loses a wheel speed it goes fail safe so the computer puts the steering in the safest mode which is the tight mode.
