OM621 190D Engine Needed Near New York, if Possible.
Well, after only short ownership, my engine seized. The temperature gauge was faulty. I started blowing smoke on the road (it was nighttime, and I couldn‘t tell if it was grey or white…) and when I got home, I shut off the car… The radiator and hoses were cool (relatively) to the touch, and when I restarted the car to check something, the starter cranked once, and stopped with a dull thud from the motor. It started after another attempt, but blew more smoke, so I shut it back off again. This morning it doesn‘t start at all. The prices to have these rebuilt the right way are astronomical, so I suppose I‘m looking to do a motor swap! The problem is, I can only find two of these engines… One is a 200D, and the other is in Bulgaria… I was wondering if there was anyone out there selling their good working 190Dc motor, from an uncompleted project, or something of the like. Thank you guys.

Any chance something more common like a 615 or 616 would fit?

find out what happened first. A 200d would work with out mods. I put a 615 in one but it took mods to sub frame for motor mounts and oil filter. I saw a chevy v8 in one. I put a 4.5 in a 220sb many mods. I do have some parts motors. call 801 706 6871 .
IP can cause alot of smoke. Find out what happened first. |

Someone told me to take off the head and check the pistons and cylinders… If the motor had seized, but was re-loosened again (the engine does start and run, albeit poorly) do you think too much damage was done? Is it salvageable? Could it just be a head gasket? I‘ve never torn into an engine before… Any tips? What do I have to do to get down to the cylinder head?

Ran it out of oil.does not run well now. It is almost certain some form of damage is present inside the engine.
Have to pull the engine for bearings check. Doubt you will see anything to help just by removing the head. Hole in piston almost no possibility. Could be head gasket but engine probably did not overheat enough. Especially if there was still some coolant in it. |

When I stopped the car there was plenty of oil in it. Could the reason why the car is running so bad be because the head gasket is bad and there is now poor compression causing the Diesel not to be burned properly? There probably was no coolant, as the radiator was cool to the touch…
Thank you all for all of your help thus far! |

check valve adjustment, look at timing chain check for looseness. check cam timing. then a compression test. Don't just pull the head. What does the smoke smell like? Is it using oil? Losing antifreeze?

The next step is to do a leakdown test. Don't bother compression testing since if you have coolant in the cylinder it could show a normal or higher than normal compression despite a blown gasket. |

Not enough info. No temp gauge not working could be a sign of previous sever over heating. It could be head gasket and cracked head. I was hoping for something less serious. Pull the valve cover, if it has run with a leaking head gasket for a while the oil will be more like pudding than just black oil. a leak down test would be nice finding tools for that would be ?????. the valve cover would have to come off any way. Tell us what it looks like in there. Pics of car would be nice too.

I've found that fetching a car purchase home after dark is always a bad idea, unless it's on a toter or trailer.
car-part.com is a good start but your car would now be considered specialty and most wreckers aren't going to have anything. But good luck to you and I'm sure you'll find something. There was a guy in IL two years ago had a yard full of MB diesel cars and needed rid of them, in the end I think they all went to scrap save for a few he got sold and a couple he moved. When I saw the place there was maybe two dozen, and there were engines already out and sitting in garages too. Steve

Just came across the thread. A little confused. You said there was oil in the crankcase, but was there coolant in the radiator? Coolant being a little low is not a big problem, empty or nearly is. If there was no coolant, then it is a certainty the engine overheated and scored the pistons and cylinders, possibly cracking the cylinder head. It would would be hard to start, could smoke, and could run poorly. This would necessitate an overhaul.
As others have said, best to do a compression test on all cylinders first. Harbor Freight sells a relatively low cost tester, good enough for occasional use. All cylinders should be about the same. Another thought: maybe it dropped a prechamber tip. The end of a prechamber can crack and break off, falling on top of the piston. This could have been the "thud" you heard. It will cause the engine to run poorly, miss, and emit black smoke since the fuel is not being atomized properly in that cylinder. You can check for this by removing the injectors and sticking a piece of wire into the prechamber hole. if one goes further than the rest, the tip is broke off. Be aware there is a ball in the center that may stop your wire prematurely (if it has not burned up) and you need to work the wire around it. If this is the case, it is not a great situation but may be salvageable by removing the head and broken part, and replacing the prechamber. Can beat the piston up pretty bad. As for a replacement engine, the W110 200D engine is a slightly better engine as it has 5 main bearing rather than 3. Otherwise it looks pretty much the same from the outside and most parts are identical and interchangeable. |

Thank you all for your insight. When I‘m able to get back to the car on my day off with the proper tools, I will give further information…
