What came in the W123 red tool bag?

I'm wondering what tools would have come from the factory in the red tool bag for an '83 W123 240D. Anyone have hard info? Looking at used, incomplete kits on ebay, I could believe it was kinda random, but random seems very unGerman.

I'm not asking about brands, but about what size wrenches, what kind of pliers, etc.

I don't know the answer, perhaps it would be in a picture in an owners manual.

I have dozens of them...
Lug wrench, screwdriver bits, screwdriver handle open end wrenchse from 10mm to 17mm, of course, the holy grail lug stud, and the lug wrench.
Also a few tube sockets ya turn with the screwdriver.
They might only come on gassers though.

My 85 had some slip joint pliers on top of that. Hazet brand. They have old pairs for sale online.

ETA it’s Hapwe not Hazet. Here is the kit for my 85. It’s funny that all of my old diesels were missing the kit or it was missing everything but the lug wrench. It’s like the POs took the tools to fix their bicycle or put in their kitchen drawer. The tools kind of suck and I’m shocked at the prices people want for them online. I mean they’re good for a car’s OEM kit but they are pretty junky. A cut above a Honda motorcycle kit but still cheap. They rust too. My 97 C280 has a complete set with channel lock pliers.

Wrenches are made by Heyco and Matador. They are also stamped Mercedes Benz. 8,10,11,13,14,17,17,19. Why two 17s…there must be something where you back up two 17s up on each other. Anyone know?

ID:	169629My daily driver's toolbag has 4 wrenches, 17x19, 17x14, 13x11, 10x8, the tubular sparkplug socket, Hapwe pliers, Felo scredriver with straight and phillips bits. I made a lug stud by cutting the head off a long bolt.

ID:	169630My parts rig's toolbag has the same wrenches, but with a little more rust, same pliers and screwdriver, again with extra rust. No spark plug socket. The bag is getting frayed, too.

No lug wrench in either, sounds like a lug wrench was standard?

That double ended tubular socket has to be for something other than spark plugs, right? Surely they wouldn't have put a spark plug socket into diesel kits for no reason?

I think the other side of the spark plug wrench is for opening the sunroof manually. I may be wrong.

That’s cool how you put in an alignment stud. My c280 kit had one in there…not sure if MB included it or the PO placed it there.

Prices???? HA! Look up an original tool kit for an old E-type and you will see what insanity looks like. And to think how many complete MB tool sets I walked by in the junkyards of Germany. The cars came with warning triangles over there, kinda wish my coupe here had one.

Anyone got a picture of this alignment stud? I can only imagine trying to change a fatass bimmer 850 rear wheel in the pissing down rain and trying to line up the stupid hole. I will never understand why the herms did this nonsense!

I was digging around in my junk box and I found this. It came with a box of parts I got from a guy who sold his 84 300sd. Like many he pulled his toolkit before selling the car. Then he sold it to me in a box of extra parts. Even the tire wrench

It’s brand new and un corroded. It has the alignment pin. The pin is oddly made of aluminum. Just an extra tool kit. I will likely sell it online to somebody who has gotta have the oem tools to feel complete.

Aluminium huh? I did not see that one coming. I need to look in my tool kit and see if it's there. I'm glad to see it's not too cosmic, I can turn one if need be.

Took a look tonight, mine is MIA. Mind getting some dimensions? I need total length, diameter and diameter of that fat part. I'm guessing it's sitting on a metric mat. I might even be able to be talking into making a small run for those of us without that silly peg.

Yeah, the 300sd one is aluminum. The one in my c280 is steel.

Yes, that’s a 1cm scale on the mat. The pin has some hourglass machining on it. It isn’t quite straight. When I get a chance I’ll measure it out and post some dimensions.

The aluminum wheel alignment pins bind/stick sometime in the lug/hub threads. Use a lubricant if using an aluminum alignment pin...been there.

A small hex that fits one of the wrenches on the end of that stud would stop that nonsense.

Thanks Yashi!

Jagboy sorry, I lost it. It was on my bench and it just walked off! I think a family member snatched it for a paper weight or something. Stay tuned. It’ll turn up.
